Job Description: The Calvert County Parks & Recreation Natural Resources Division is seeking a Naturalist I. In this role, you will help connect the community to nature through hands-on education and stewardship activities. While no experience is required, candidates with prior experience in environmental education, natural resource interpretation, or related fields are strongly encouraged to apply. Performs naturalist work in County parks and natural resource areas. The work involves carrying out educational and interpretive programs for visitors. The work requires a degree and no experience. Workers report to a technical supervisor. Essential Job Functions Prepares educational programs for presentation to visitors: researches subjects, ascertains learning objectives and develops activities and materials for the program. Organizes materials, volunteers and materials and conducts programs; cleans up and reorganizes materials upon completion, and evaluates program effectiveness. Maintains live animals. Maintains non-living collections. Writes articles and prepares layout/graphic materials. Other Duties Performs trail maintenance work. Performs related work as required. Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities (These are pre-employment KSA that apply only to Essential Job Functions.) Knowledge of-- Principles and practices of the biological sciences as applied to the programs of the County parks and natural resources areas. Ability to-- Develop and present educational and interpretive naturalist programs. Perform park and outdoor maintenance work. Establish and maintain effective working relationships with others encountered in the work. Communicate effectively orally and in writing. Deal effectively with the public. Required Qualifications (Note: Any acceptable combination of education, training and relevant experience that provides the above knowledge, abilities and skills may be substituted on a full-time year for year basis.) Training and/or Education: Bachelor's degree in biology or related field. Experience: None Licenses or Certificates: None Special Requirements: Subject to background investigation. Physical Demands: Requires long periods of standing, frequent walking indoors, repeated bending, crouching, stooping, stretching or reaching; recurring lifting of objects up to 49 pounds. Unusual Demands: May be required to work weekends. Exposed to hazards of working with captive wildlife. FLSA Status: Exempt Compensation Steps: Department of Parks and Recreation, Natural Resources Pay rate: $32.18 - $34.44 per hour; $58,568 - $62,681 annually Grade 722, Merit full-time position, 35 hours per week Position closing date: August 13, 2025 Please Note: This position will close at 11:59 p.m. on August 13, 2025.
