Harm Reduction Support Worker

One of a network of provincial community health centres, the NorWest Community Health Centres is a community based, non-profit organization funded by Ontario Health, emphasizing access to primary health care and prevention programs and services.
We are currently seeking a 1.0 FTE Harm Reduction Support Worker. This position fosters a peer led approach that will strengthen capacity among individuals that use drugs and share drug use equipment to reduce risk taking behaviours. The Harm Reduction Support Workers will be responsible for mobile outreach, mobile drug checking, drug alerts (via the Lifeguard App), distributing harm reduction supplies, providing harm reduction education, and effectively engaging and collaborating with service users, interdisciplinary team members and community partners to make referrals for health and allied health care services.
The position has a competitive salary and an option to join the Health Care of Ontario Pension Plan.
QUALIFICATIONS:
Knowledge of community services and resources, and strong advocacy skills.
Proven experience with overdose prevention and response, and training/experience with Naloxone administration.
Experience and knowledge of substance use, harm reduction education, and homelessness. Lived experience is considered an asset in this role.
Experience utilizing harm reduction principles and strategies.
Demonstrated ability to de-escalate conflict and strong communication skills.
Confidence in asserting oneself and maintaining strong boundaries.
Open, non-judgmental and willing to learn.
Awareness of and sensitivity to health issues particularly within populations who face barriers to accessing care (under housed, living with mental health challenges or diagnoses, current or past substance use, complex health histories, 2SLGBTQIA+, newcomers, non-insured).
Proficiency in the use of computers and various software applications.
A vehicle and a valid driver’s licence are required.
Criminal Record Check required before employment.
