The opportunity
We're looking for an experienced, engaging, and quality-driven newsletter editor to lead our community-focused daily newsletter in Halifax, The Coast. This is a part-time contract role.
The newsletter editor will plan, write, edit, and publish the most relevant, engaging, and conversational stories that give local residents a daily briefing of what’s going on in Halifax. The must-read local briefing provides readers with information they need to understand their community, their neighbours, and how to connect to both.
In this role you will…
Oversee production and publishing of the daily newsletter, ensuring that stories are told accurately, engagingly and in our house style
Plan, write, edit, and publish the copy for each section of the newsletter
Write, edit, and publish website content as needed
Stay up to date with the latest newsletter trends—you think in click rates and optimization best practices
Monitor and optimize performance of the newsletter to meet subscriber, engagement, and growth targets
Maintain a long- and short-term content calendar to keep track of what’s being published each day, week, month
Communicate with a team of freelancers who will be writing main stories for the newsletter and what topics will be covered
Work with approved freelancers to edit their stories and publish them to the website
Manage the newsletter inbox and respond to emails from readers
Build trust with our audience through quality work
Follow journalistic standards and practices as laid out by CAJ
About you
You have a ton of writing and editing experience with online publications. A little copywriting and marketing experience is a big plus
You have written a newsletter before, even if it’s just internal or a passion project
You subscribe to and enjoy reading newsletters, appreciating their audience engagement nuance and tactics
You know how to write in a way that gets readers past the headline—a sense of humour and irreverence is a definite asset
You know Halifax and the HRM inside and out and have an understanding of the local arts, culture, business, and media landscape
You are able to critically analyze, contextualize, and question information and opinions—and know the difference between them
You have excellent communication and organizational skills
You know how to use tools like Slack, Beehiiv (or another email platform, such as MailChimp or Substack), and G Suite
You are able to meet deadlines and handle multiple projects at a time
You have supported, worked in, or managed a newsroom before
You boast meticulous attention to detail and can spot the difference between an n-dash and an m-dash (and use it based on the accepted style guide)

We do this by identifying journalists, creators, and existing brands who share in this belief and provide tools, resources, and financial support to help them create in their communities.
We have multiple community brands across Canada under our umbrella. Some of the newsletter-based journalism outlets we’ve built to date include Capital Daily, Vancouver Tech Journal, Georgia Straight, and Fraser Valley Current.
