Position Overview:
This is a ski patroller who is training and working toward all of the performance requirements and certifications of a Ski Patroller Grade 1. These staff members are in the first 90 calendar days of work. This probationary period may be extended past 90 days if performance requirements are not met.
The primary goal of these employees is to learn and demonstrate all the tasks and skills required to function as an independent ski patroller and be promoted to a ski patroller – Grade 1.
The incumbent should expect to be working outside in any, all and sometimes adverse/extreme weather conditions.
This is a full-time seasonal role within the Safety Operations Department. This position has a compressed schedule/two-week rotating cycle: Nine (9) hours per day (operating season), eight (8) hours per day (non-operating season). Alberta Employment Standards regarding probationary periods apply.
Job Duties/Responsibilities:
Work in a safe and efficient manner as a member of the Safety Operations team
Learn demonstrate the expected tasks and skills required to function as an independent ski patroller
Learn the skills and demonstrate that you can provide on-hill rescue and first aid.
Learn the skills and demonstrate that you can be a Team Member during lift evacuation(s)
Learn and demonstrate basic AvSar skills to act as a Team Member during avalanche rescue
Learn about and skillfully and consistently Identify and mitigate hazards on hill
Perform trail maintenance, as required
Identify and address safety concerns pertaining to staff and guests. Ensure supervisors are made aware of residual risks of concern
Respect and adhere to the company’s policies and procedures as set in the “Corporate Policies”, “Employee Handbook” and “Safety Operations Training Manual”.
Understand and adhere to Ski Marmot Basin’s “Harassment Policy” and the company’s “Privacy Policy”.
Report any damage to vehicles to the Vehicle Maintenance supervisor.
Other duties, as assigned by your supervisor
Qualifications:
Strong skiing ability in all mountainous conditions
Physically fit and able to ski with heavy loads (25+ kgs)
80 hour advanced First Aid course or higher accreditation.
CPR current certification
Avalanche Skills Training Course Level 1 (preferred) or other equivalent CAA accreditation
Canadian Avalanche Association Industry Training Program level 1 (preferred)
Have a vulnerable persons record check on file with Marmot Basin Human resources.
Provided to the DPS a criminal record check on the first day of work and have an application into Natural resources Canada Explosives Regulatory Division to obtain a letter of approval.
Rope training, snowmobile experience, practical first aid experience are all assets
Alberta Class 5 Driver’s license or equivalent.

Performance Requirements:
Demonstrate that you meet all of the qualifications and performance requirements to become a Ski Patroller Grade 1 and be promoted to a Ski Patroller – Grade 1.
Demonstrate familiarity with all sections of Marmot Basin’s Safety Operations Manual
Successfully complete all proof of knowledge and assessments.
Successfully complete the Marmot Basin First aid refresher
Complete the primary survey skill assessment.
Demonstrate knowledge of and ability to apply first aid treatment tools for patient care and packaging.
Have at least three (3) supervised patient contacts. Deports themselves in a professional manner on accidents scenes and during patient interactions.
Demonstrate knowledge of Marmot Basins first aid protocols/algorithms
Complete the general and safety operations ski skills assessment.
Complete the training and evaluation to use a rescue toboggan (10-23)
Demonstrate an understanding of and be able to appropriately apply hazard marking, do run checks and fence line checks.
Learn all eleven (11) basic sweeps
Demonstrate proficiency with Marmot Basin radio protocol
Demonstrate the basic skills associated with “Lift down procedures (10-30’s)” and manual chair lift evacuation
Become familiar with area coverage, accident (10-22) response, as well as equipment & personnel movement
Demonstrate familiarity with Avalanche Rescue Plan
Demonstrate familiarity with transceiver, recco and other AvSar tool use. Can locate and probe 2 avalanche transceivers in under 5 minutes.
Read and signed off on Marmot Basin’s Employee Handbook
Read and signed off on the Safety Operations Work Hazard Assessment
Maintain training checklist(s).
Core Competencies:
Professional deportment with excellent customer service skills: experience dealing with all on-hill patrons
Demonstrated temperament and disposition for highly stressful situations, i.e. administering first aid, triage situations, with guests, and explosives
Able to ski in all types of mountain terrain in varying conditions.
Attributes:
Strong team member, able to take direction
Trustworthy and capable of working unsupervised
Recreational mountain pursuits, such as rock climbing, and ski touring, are considered assets.
Employees in this position are responsible for providing the following tools: Skis, simple sit harness, triple action locking carabiner, three antenna digital transceiver, avalanche probe, avalanche shovel, black ski pants as well as other sundry items. An annual equipment allowance is provided.
For your safety and that of your patients, it is very strongly recommended that safety operations staff preforming patient care have up to date inoculations against; Polio, Hepatitis A/B, Mumps/Rubella, Diphtheria tetanus, Varicella, Measles, Influenza (yearly), & COVID 19.
All employees in this position are required to:
Complete the Marmot Basin and Safety Operations ski skill assessment and have a copy on file
Pass a ski binding test, for all work boots & skis, performed & recorded by Marmot Basin Rental/Repair staff.
Have a vulnerable persons record check completed and on file. To be completed yearly
Have a drivers abstract on file with Marmot Basin HR
