The Department of Surgery in the Cumming School of Medicine invites applications for a Clinical Research Nurse Coordinator. This Full-time Fixed Term position is for approximately 12 months (based on length of grant funding), with the possibility of extension.
The Clinical Research Nurse Coordinator will report to and be accountable to the Orthopaedic Trauma Research Scientific Director, in the Department of Surgery, Cumming School of Medicine. This position will receive direction from the Orthopaedic Trauma Research Scientific Director and Principal Investigators of each project. The Clinical Research Nurse Coordinator will be a member of the Foothills Orthopaedic Trauma Research Team that is comprised of Trauma Division surgeons and researchers at the Foothills Medical Centre.
Summary of Key Responsibilities (job functions include but are not limited to):
- Responsible for the coordination and administration of various research projects in collaboration with members of the Orthopaedic Trauma Research Team
- Provide research support, produce reports, and administer research policies and procedures
- Recruitment of patients into clinical research projects, booking appointments, collecting patient data, taking clinical patient histories, and patient education
- Scheduling appointments for current research patients within study protocol guidelines
- Blood sample collection and blood sample analysis using laboratory equipment
- Work closely with the Research Manager and Principal Investigator in areas of analytics and reporting
- Assist with submitting research grant proposals
- Preparation of grant proposals, ethics applications, and reports for current and future research projects
- Maintenance of filing system and archiving as required and in compliance with current standard operating procedures
- Responsible for personal and professional development by adding to skills and knowledge through courses that may be available through the University of Calgary, Continuing Education, and applicable online resources
- Obtaining and maintaining certifications in the regulations and guidelines governing the conduct of clinical research involving human subjects (Privacy and Security Training, TCPS2, GCP, Health Canada Division 5, N2 SOPs)
- Obtaining and maintaining certifications required for Lab and Biohazard Lab Personnel
- Obtaining and maintaining certifications required for phlebotomy
Qualifications / Requirements:
- Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) or Registered Nurse (RN)certification required A minimum of 1 to 3 years of related technical experience in a medical/clinical setting with clinical research involvement required
- A combination of education, training and experience may be considered
- Phlebotomy/venipuncture certification is required or willingness to obtain certification
- Ability and willingness to work with various biological samples (e.g., blood, tissues, urine)
- Provide skilled technical procedures to support the research project
- Operate technical equipment
- Knowledge of musculoskeletal and/or medical terminology is an asset
- Experience in Orthopaedic Trauma Research is an asset
- Ability to plan and direct research activities within a team environment
- Ability to provide support to other members of the team and related units or teams
- Ability to solve problems
- Intermediate to advanced skills in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Outlook, Excel, PowerPoint)
- Excellent interpersonal and organizational skills
- Understanding and knowledge of research ethics and regulations for ethics applications, renewals, and amendments
- Demonstrated ability in professional writing, preparing reports, and conducting literature reviews for the purpose of presentation and publication
- Open to learning and willing to accept new challenges and assignments
- Experience with electronic medical records in AHS is an asset (Connect Care, IMPAX)
- Biohazard laboratory training and certifications required for the conduct of clinical research involving human subjects is an asset
