Your opportunity:
Reports to the Director, Physics Learning & Research Services, and receives work and direction from the Main workshop Supervisor, the Student Workshop Supervisor designs, constructs, tests, modifies and repairs complex scientific apparatus and equipment using a wide variety of advanced methods and equipment including the use of CAD/CAM and numerical machining.
The Student Workshop Supervisor is responsible for all aspects of student workshop operations including the maintenance of equipment, tools and supplies, user training and consulting, and providing day-to-day support, and scheduling; assisting, and researching and teaching staff with mechanical design, materials selection and manufacturing methodologies related to the manufacture of scientific apparatus. The incumbent is required to work to very high tolerances demanding a high level of expertise in the use of computer-aided drafting, design and manufacturing tools and computer-controlled machines. Performs all duties within the context of a team of highly motivated and committed students.
This is a 100% on-site position.
Your responsibilities will include:
- Designing, modifying and fabricating custom lab apparatus, tools and jigs
- Creating and reviewing technical drawing sets for manufacturing
- Analyzing applicable installation methods for apparatus and devices
- Providing detailed explanations and demonstrating procedures to students and/or employees on fabrication techniques
- Preparing, assembling andsetting-up material, equipment and supplies according to the needs of the facility
- Advising on suitability of experimental apparatus and fabrication techniques
- Drafting and editing training content
- Providing safety training and ensuring adherence to safety procedures and standards
Essential Qualifications:
- Completed Ontario College Diploma (2 years) in general machining or tool and die making with the completion of Ontario College of Trades apprenticeship, or an acceptable equivalent in education and experience.
- Eight years or more recent and relevant experience designing, constructing, testing, modifying and repairing complex scientific apparatus and equipment in an academic environment, or equivalent, with supervisory training and/or experience.
- Experience providing technical training and support to students and staff on mechanical design, materials selection and manufacturing methodologies related to the manufactureof scientific apparatus.
- Demonstrated experience with PC and other computers.
- Must have experience in the use of CAD/CAM, Mastercam preferred.
- Demonstrated experience in inert gas welding of aluminum, stainless steel, and other metals.
- Demonstrated experience with machining copper, various grades of stainless steel, ceramics (Macor, Shapal), and plastics (Peek, Vespel).
- Demonstrated experience with micromachining techniques.
- Demonstrated advanced skills with a variety of different manufacturing methods and machines such as milling machines, lathes, saws, drills, grinders, welding and cutting equipment etc., as well as digital measuring systems and NC manufacturing systems.
- Excellent fine motor skills and good coordination for machine operation and mechanical construction, CAD/CAM, mechanical design, fabrication, welding and soldering, modification and repair.
- Must demonstrate creativity and adaptability in an atmosphere where ideas, effort and credit are shared amongst all members of the Mechanical Workshop.
- Strong oral and written skills for the communication of technical specifications.
- Excellent Microsoft Word and Excel skills.
- Strong interaction and relationship building skills with clients, students, and other staff members.

Pay Scale Group & Hiring Zone:
USW Pay Band 14 -- $90,056. with an annual step progression to a maximum of $115,169. Pay scale and job class assignment is subject to determination pursuant to the Job Evaluation/Pay Equity Maintenance Protocol.
