The Department of Oncology in the Cumming School of Medicine invites applications for a Research Assistant. This Full-Time Fixed Term position is for approximately 1 year (based on length of grant funding), with the possibility of extension.
This position reports to the Principal Investigator.
This position is as a Research Assistant working on various projects related to integrative and psychosocial oncology, including in person, online and app-based mindfulness meditation intervention studies and questionnaire studies. The RA will work with the PI on study ethics applications, compiling study materials such as consent forms and questionnaires, recruitment and interaction with participants and health care providers, in-person and online data collection including both qualitative and quantitative methods, data entry, as well as assisting with grant applications and drafting manuscripts.
Summary of Key Responsibilities (job functions include but are not limited to):
- Participant recruitment, including creating promotional material and in person recruitment
- Providing operational support for recruitment mailout through the Alberta Cancer Registry (ACR)
- Screening potential participants
- Organizing, scheduling and running assessments
- Data collection and entering
- Managing key operations for data collection and storage multi-site studies
- Provide email, phone and text-based support for patients with technology-related problems
- Website design, including graphical content and interactive media
- Data Management:
- Write syntax and develop reports for multiple longitudinal data sets using statistical software including Excel, SPSS and SAS.
- Responsible for collecting and analyzing data, organizing, and cleaning data, specific to request and project
- Develop and test evaluation surveys and other instruments (e.g., questionnaires, interview guide) in conjunction with research team on REDCap
- Design, operate and maintain databases and documentation
- Grants and Ethics:
- Preparing documentation for ethics submissions to HREBA-CC
- Support preparation of grant submissions, CCVs, attachments and budget requests for competitive scientific funding awards, including for CIHR and CCS, using online submission systems
- Administration:
- Onboarding volunteers and new staff onto AHS and University of Calgary
- Training and managing a team of 13+ volunteers, summer students and part-time research assistant
Qualifications / Requirements:
- Undergraduate degree required; degree in Psychology preferred
- Minimum 2 years of related experience
- Intermediate to advanced skills in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Outlook, Excel, PowerPoint)
- Excellent interpersonal and organizational skills
- Demonstrated ability for professional report writing
- Knowledge of research ethics and regulations for granting agencies (eg. Tri Council)
- Ability to problem solve in complex situations
- Demonstrated strong communication, team and customer service skills, and an ability to exercise judgment within established guidelines
- Must be open to learning and development, and be willing to accept new challenges and assignments
- A positive attitude and the ability to work independently and as part of a team are critical to success
