The Office of Continuing Medical Education in the Cumming School of Medicine is currently seeking a Full-time Fixed-Term Education Consultant for approximately 10 months.
The Continuing Medical Education & Professional Development (CME & PD) Office's mission is to provide and coordinate integrated academic educational and assessment activities and resources that promote lifelong learning for health care professionals for excellence in clinical practice focused on improving health outcomes. The dynamic nature of the field of medicine requires the Education Consultant to be flexible and strategic and the work requires attention to multiple deadlines and discretionary decision-making. The ability to exercise judgment is essential for many aspects of the position including resolving problems, managing conflicts, and managing competing priorities.
The position of Education Consultant reports to the Manager, CME&PD, CME.
This position works within standard University hours. However, this position will experience peak periods requiring staggered starts to the work day, additional hours and/or some occasional changes to the work week.
Summary of Key Responsibilities (job functions include but are not limited to):
Contribute to Strategic Direction of the Office:
- Active member of the CME & PD leadership team, faculty committee and accreditation team
- Use connections in the local, regional, provincial, and national environment in health care to determine perceived and unperceived needs of physicians, health care organizations and other healthcare providers
- Explore co-development opportunities with academic departments, faculties/schools and other health organizations (AHS, CPSA)
- Conduct market research and needs assessments to evaluate potential courses and programs that are high quality, financially viable and meet CME's mandate and strategies
Ensure Curriculum Excellence:
- Offer expertise in instructional design, conceptual design, and curricular design in the development of programs with stakeholders and stakeholder organizations
- Translate innovative ideas, programs, goals, objectives of a given program into logistics and arrangements with all stakeholders and stakeholder organizations
- Apply project management strategies to ensure smooth implementation of quality CME&PD educational programs
- Provide expertise in meeting accreditation standards for both Colleges, and translating these standards into practical application for all programs
- Play an integral role in the design and analysis of needs assessments and environmental scans for new program development
- Play a key role in evaluation of learning and programs
- Find opportunities to incorporate principles of physician assessment and feedback into our programs
- Stay abreast of new developments in educational and training initiatives with regard to curriculum, delivery, markets, providers and competition
Communication & Leadership
- Lead course committees of subject matter experts and advise course chairs, anticipating their needs and potential pitfalls as a means to ensure appropriate adherence to policy, ethical standards, and responsible stewardship of funds
- Participate in faculty committees and contribute to strategic and innovative program planning
- Monitor and respond to instructor and physician concerns in a timely and professional fashion, provide innovative instructional design support to faculty
- Proactively address concerns and mitigate problems to ensure a positively student/instructor experience
- Work collaboratively with and coaching when appropriate Educational Coordinators and Program Assistants to ensure translation between program development and program delivery
Financial
- Provide advice regarding management of fiscal considerations, timelines, project management, relationships with industry and other risk management-related activities in the development of courses
Qualifications / Requirements:
- Masters degree in a medical/education/adult education related professional required or a Masters degree with a Bachelors degree in a medical/health/education profession will be considered
- Knowledge and/or experience in healthcare, quality improvement, systems thinking and/or coaching required
- A minimum of 5-7 years of recent related experience
- A combination of education and experience may be considered
- Strong knowledge/skill base in curriculum development, evaluation and instructional methods required
- Knowledge and skill in synchronous, asynchronous and distance education required
- Knowledge and understanding of the educational and training needs of medical professionals
- Demonstrated organizational, planning and project management skills required
- Positive attitude and demonstrated ability to be a collaborative team member
- Good judgment and initiative, tact and diplomacy in dealing with the frequent interactions with medical professions, staff, University departments and external organizations
- Strong working knowledge of Microsoft Office Professional (Word, Excel, Outlook and PowerPoint), Zoom and engagement technologies required
- CCFP and RCPSC accreditation experience an asset
- Familiarity with the University of Calgary/CME and/or Alberta Health Services Business models an asset
