Job Summary
Markham Museum is a 25-acre site with 32 built structures. Our gardens, orchard, and landscape features complement the buildings and aid our interpretation of three primary themes: Settlement as it relates to our Environment and the Technologies we use to adapt to life in Markham. We deliver a dynamic series of programs year-round including public and education programs, events, and exhibitions, which attract 50,000 visitors annually, many of them families with young children. The Museum also serves as a rental venue for weddings, corporate functions, and private parties.
The Museum Educational Program Instructor (Science \& Technology Specialist) will work within the Programming Department and will be responsible for the planning, supervision, and delivery of exploration-based, hands-on history and science education programs for children ranging from 4 to 16 years of age. The Museum Educational Program Instructor will create camp activities related to science, technology, the environment \& history, with a special focus on STEAM based programming to complement our current exhibition "Everyday Superheroes."
Key Duties And Responsibilities
- Delivers education programs to groups of approximately 18-30 participants (including teachers/leaders) on the Museums 25-acre grounds and offsite for outreach programs, both indoors and outdoors year-round, to schools and scheduled groups (e.g. Scouts \& Girl Guides) based on the current Ontario Curriculum and other learning requirements of the group.
- Prepares for education programs by collecting all items required and preparing buildings/locations on site for the program including but not limited to signing out teaching collection artefacts for discussion purposes and setting up geocaches.
- Keeps up to date on all program materials/content and is prepared to deliver programs as scheduled.
- Assists in the preparation of programming materials as needed, including monitoring inventory of supplies and reporting to the Volunteer Administrator and/or the Program Coordinator any items needing replacement.
- Assists with the development of new education programming and the updating/revamping of current programs.
- Completes all program related forms as required (i.e. accident report, maintenance work orders, etc.).
- Advises Education and Volunteer Administrator and/or the Program Coordinator of any customer service issues or inquiries. Recommends program enhancements based on feedback.
- Conducts building checks prior and after programs to ensure all museum spaces are ready for groups and for those using the space after. This includes opening and closing the main museum buildings.
- Assists in ensuring a safe environment for all participants and reports any potential hazards to the Education and Volunteer Administrator and/or the Program Coordinator.
- Participates in all required training sessions and delivers program content as directed.
- Provides support to volunteers and staff assisting with education program delivery.
- Assists with the training of new members of the Museums Programming Department.
- Other Museum related duties as assigned.
Required Skills \& Competencies
- Must be a minimum of 16 years of age by June 1, 2025.
- Currently enrolled in a post-secondary institution or graduated from a relevant field.
- Up to date Standard First Aid with CPR 'C'.
- HIGH FIVE Principle Healthy Child Development is required.
- Must be able to provide a clear Vulnerable Sector Screening.
All offers of employment for this position will be conditional on a satisfactory reference check and a vulnerable sector check. All required certifications must be in good standing by June 1, 2025.
