Mechanical & Manufacturing Engineering within the Schulich School of Engineering invites applications for a Research Assistant for Camera-Based Glare Assessment Project. This Part-time Recurring Part-time position is for approximately 4 months (based on length of grant funding), with the possibility of extension.
Reporting to the Principle Investigator, the incumbent will determine the available state-of-the-art technology to achieve camera-based luminance measurement in the field. The average schedule is 10 hours/week from May 5 through August 29, 2025 and will mostly be work from home with occasional in-person meetings on campus.
Summary of Key Responsibilities (job functions include but are not limited to):
- Conduct a brief literature review on camera-based techniques to measure luminance.
- Propose preliminary procedures for in-field estimation of reflected luminance.
- Compile and rank a list of off-the-shelf equipment that could be used in said procedures.
- Identify research questions to be answered in a laboratory setting to support the development of the field-based techniques.
- Perform background research from existing scientific and engineering literature.
- Conceptual design of measurement systems.
- High-level planning of measurement campaigns.
- Sourcing and costing equipment (i.e., gather quotes, compare options, evaluate specifications)
Qualifications / Requirements:
- BSc in Mechanical Engineering.
- Hands-on experience with a variety of mechanical and electrical equipment.
- Independent thinker and investigator.
- Self-motivated.
- Prior field measurement experience valued.
