OVERVIEW
Registered Practical Nurses (RPNs) possess a defined body of knowledge, clinical skills, procedural skills, and professional attitudes focused on effective patient and family-centered care. RPNs apply these competencies to collect and interpret information, make appropriate clinical decisions, and carry out therapeutic nursing interventions. In collaboration with Registered Nurses, RPNs operate within the boundaries of their knowledge, skills, judgment, personal expertise, healthcare setting, and patient preferences.
The RPN in the Medicine/Surgery A2 unit must have a broad range of nursing skills related to general medical-surgical nursing. The RPN must demonstrate excellent critical thinking skills and adaptability to unpredictable situations. To meet organizational needs, the RPN must be willing to cross-train into specialty areas as required. This position primarily supports Medicine and Surgery Units, but staff may be assigned to other areas within the organization that fall under the Medicine and Surgery clinical setting domain.
EDUCATION
- Registered Practical Nursing diploma with a current certificate of registration issued by the College of Nurses of Ontario.
- Current Medication Administration certificate (for RPN).
- Maintains competence relative to current practice.
- Recent experience and evidence of recent related continuing education in medical-surgical nursing are assets.
- Current BLS certification required.
QUALIFICATIONS
- At least 1 year of recent medical/surgical experience.
- Willingness to work across different areas within the Medicine and Surgery clinical setting domain.
- Maintains competence relative to current practices.
- Familiarity with feeding pumps, G-feeds, oxygen administration, sterile dressings, and intermittent catheterization.
- Skills in pain and symptom assessment.
- Knowledge of PCA is an asset.
- Motivated to pursue educational goals.
- Excellent observational skills and ability to provide patient-focused care.
- Strong interpersonal and communication skills.
- Previous pediatric experience and LTC/chronic care experience with palliative/respiratory populations are assets.
- Good work and attendance record required.
- Adherence to legislated practices of the Occupational Health and Safety Act of Ontario is mandatory.
- Contribute to a culture of safety by following MGH policies and procedures.
- Responsible for safeguarding psychological health and safety of self and colleagues.
