Student Wellness Services in Student Experience and Support is currently seeking a Full-time Regular Student Wellness Licensed Practical Nurse.
Student Wellness Services supports and empowers students to achieve and maintain good health and well-being through family medicine/primary care, psychiatry, nursing, counsellors, Student Support Advisors, chiropractors, and massage therapists in a clinic setting. As a member of the Student Wellness Services team, this position reports to the Director, Health and Counselling Services. This position is predominantly located at U of C Main Campus; however travel to the other campuses may also be required. This position works 35 hours per week, within the AUPE Collective Agreement, with hours of work ranging from 8:30am to 4:30pm, Monday through Friday.
Summary of Key Responsibilities (job functions include but are not limited to):
- Advises patients regarding health concerns, and reinforces self-care directions given to patients by the physicians, as required.
- Reviews medication schedules upon request by the physician, and provides patient teaching for the same.
- Provides patient education for after-care such as wound care, etc.
- Provides procedural assistance to physicians as required.
- Conducts procedures independently as outlined in clinic policy and procedure documents.
- Makes appropriate consultations and supports referrals to other healthcare providers.
- Coordinates laboratory and diagnostic exams/tests as requested by physicians, and provides patient education as needed.
- Performs head to toe assessment, including vision, height, weight, and vital sign measurement.
- Reviews and assesses laboratory and diagnostic imaging results, informs appropriate provider, and uses critical thinking to determine next steps in patient care.
- Assesses and maintains all medical equipment for good working condition, and ensures all exam rooms are fully stocked with medical supplies as appropriate.
- Coordinates the ordering of medical supplies for the clinic by making recommendations to the Director.
- Safeguards confidentiality of patient information
- Triages patients for any variation of presenting complaint and past medical history, including mental health concerns.
- Assists in disposing of bio hazardous wastes.
- Participates in health education and promotion on campus if within the scope of a LPN subject matter expertise.
- Provides consultations and administers immunizations for academic programs based on those program's requirements.
- Provides consultations and administers immunizations based on public health schedule and requirements.
- May participate in University run seasonal immunization campaigns, such as influenza and COVID.
- Manages and supports vaccine storage and administration as per Alberta Health Services rules and regulations.
- Assists physicians and psychiatrists with mental health patients regarding appropriate referrals, follow-up appointments and case management within the clinic, with internal and external campus referrals.
- Assists physicians with health emergencies, including mental health.
- Acts as a liaison between counselling, student support advisors, and Student Accessibility Services (SAS), reviewing patients in a collaborative model.
- Trained in medical device reprocessing.
- Directs patients to examination rooms, maintains an orderly and efficient flow in the clinic.
- Attends SWS staff meetings as required.
- Assists in policy, procedure, and protocol development related to SWS.
- Assists with developing and implementing health education programs for students.
- Participates in and coordinates clinical administrative tasks, such as chart preparation, document management, mail, supply and medication ordering.
- Support in managing schedules for the nursing team and physician team, as required.
- Support in managing daily nursing assignment as required.
Qualifications / Requirements:
- Registration with College of Licensed Practical Nurses of Alberta.
- CPR-C/BLS required.
- 3-5 years experience in public health, primary care, and mental health (or combination) required.
- Electronic medical record experience in Accuro or similar preferred.
- Exceptional communication and documentation skills required.
- Excellent assessment skills and application of nursing process required.
- Ability to multi-task, prioritize and manage workload and schedule independently is required.
- Experience working in a multidisciplinary team with clear demonstration of the ability to work well with and be respectful of co-workers and students.
- Critical thinking and the ability to problem solve is required.
- Experience providing preceptorship to new hires and students is preferred.
- Previous experience in case management is preferred.
