This is a post-secondary student position funded through the Canada Summer Jobs Program. Canada Summer Jobs is a program under the Youth Employment and Skills Strategy, which aims to provide flexible services to help all young Canadians develop the skills and gain paid work experience to successfully transition into the labor market.
Job Title: ESL Summer Program Counsellors
Location: St. John’s, NL
Position Type: 13 positions
Start Date: June 24, 2025
Pay Rate: $16.00/hour
Hours and Duration: 35 hours/week for 8 weeks (approx.)
Closing Date: May 28, 2025
The ESL Summer Program Counsellors assist in planning and delivering the program activities. They will supervise the well-being and safety of newcomer youth and support the positive socio-emotional learning of the youth in their care. Each camp counsellor will be directly responsible for a certain number of youth participants and will attend to their specific needs. They will also be expected to participate in other duties as required, such as facility cleaning, site supervision, etc. All members learn to work in a team setting and maintain communications with other members, and with parents.
Role and Responsibilities:
Coordinate, conduct, and supervise all recreational activities for children and young teenagers during their stay at the camp
Ensure the smooth running of all the day-to-day activities by maintaining the camp’s safety
Ensure the well-being and safety of campers by creating a safe, fun, and rewarding environment
Report any incidents to the CAYP Coordinator immediately
Qualifications and Experience:
Have experience working with children and youth
Be a good role model
Possess leadership and communication skills
Be reliable and skilled at solving problems
Be patient and understanding in all circumstances
Certificate in High-Five training considered an asset
Proficiency speaking another language considered an asset
Requirements of Employment:
Be between 15-30 years of age at the beginning of the employment period
Be a Canadian citizen, Permanent Resident (PR), or a person to whom refugee protection has been conferred under the Immigration and Refugee Protection Act for the duration of the employment
Hold a valid Social Insurance Number (SIN) at the start of employment
Legal authorization to work in Canada
Position is subject to a satisfactory Criminal Record Screening and Vulnerable Sector Check from the Royal Newfoundland Constabulary is required at beginning of employment (APPLY FOR CRS & VSC HERE)
