To help fulfill its mission, LOFT is hiring a Relief Cook.
Job Summary
The Cook renders a range of services that relate to the operation of the kitchen. These responsibilities include the preparation and service of food for the meals as scheduled and for other special occasions as requested and the storing and stocking of food. Cleaning duties pertaining to maintaining the cleanliness of the kitchen and dining room, as well as other delegated responsibilities, are included to ensure the efficient operation of the kitchen’s food service.
What You Will Do
Prepare/cook the food for scheduled meals, snacks, and other occasions, as requested, according to the menu plan; prepare/cook appropriate food for those on special diets as required.
Ensure that the standard of quality for the food service is maintained.
Ensure utensils, etc. are available for meals as scheduled.
Serve meals at specified times.
Clear and clean tables in the dining room area after the mealtime is finished.
Clean all dishes, utensils and equipment used in the preparation and service of the food provided by the kitchen.
Clean all stoves, refrigerators, freezers, cupboards, pantries and all other equipment and areas that are associated with kitchen food service.
Monitor inventory of storage areas and refrigerator/freezer units; accept and store deliveries/food in proper areas and according to policy.
Other related duties as assigned by the Food Services Coordinator
What You Bring:
Must Haves
Several years of kitchen/cooking experience and/or training
Knowledge of equipment used in the preparation of food
Knowledge of health standards for the handling and storage of food
Knowledge of nutrition standards and special diet requirements
Knowledge of occupational Health and Safety Standards
Valid Food Handler’s Certificate
Key Skills and Competencies:
Ability to communicate in English, oral and written.
Work Environment:
Since the workplace involves working in resident/tenant member’s own homes, staff may be subjected to secondhand smoke while performing their job duties.
The following physical movements are required as part of the regular routines of the job:
Frequency:
Standing – ongoing daily
Walking – ongoing daily
Sitting – 1.5 hrs/day (breaks)
Climbing – stairs to staff room and washroom
Lifting (floor to waist) – twice/week – max. 35 lbs
Lifting (waist to shoulder) – ongoing daily – under 10 lbs
Repetitive bending, lifting, twisting or turning – 2 hrs/day
Crouching – 1-2 times/day
Reaching – 1 hour/day sporadically
Kneeling – 1-2 times/day
Bending – 1 hour/day, sporadically
Weight factors - Frequency per day:
Under 2 lbs – ongoing
Under 5 lbs – ongoing
Under 10 lbs – 2 hours/day, twice/day
15-20 Pounds – 8 times/day
20-30 lbs – occasionally, 1-2 times/day
30-50 lbs – twice/day
Use of equipment such as a trolley is provided for staff to move heavy items to and from the work/preparation area.
