Position Summary

We are seeking a Family Development Worker to join our team, working collaboratively to enhance the wellness and support services provided through the Health Services and Departments.
Under the direction of the Family Development Supervisor the Family Development Worker provides culturally informed wellness and support services to families. This role involves conducting client assessments, creating service plans, coordinating workshops, maintaining case records, and supporting families on their journey toward wellness and independence. The Family Development Worker will also engage in community relations activities, working to strengthen connections with clients.
This is a 6 month Full-Time Term Contract with an end date of December 9, 2025, with the possibility of extension.
What You'll Do
Core Responsibilities
Maintain confidentiality of all acquired client information.
Provide services in a non-judgmental, culturally sensitive, and trauma-informed manner.
Deliver services promptly, respectfully, and equitably in accordance with Seabird Island Band’s policies
and procedures.
Uphold fairness and unbiased practices in all client interactions.
Remain accessible, accountable, and responsive to the needs of community members.
Client Services & Case Management
Receive and respond to referrals from individuals, families, community members, and/or other health and social service providers.
Conduct initial client assessments to determine needs and appropriate services needed.
Assist clients in identifying goals, developing personalized plans, and implementing strategies to support improved wellness and independence.
Facilitate regular case meetings with clients, families, and relevant service providers to ensure coordinated care.
Maintain healthy professional boundaries while promoting client independence.
Consult regularly with the supervisor to review client care plans and service approaches.
Program Development & Delivery
Coordinate, plan, and facilitate workshops and educational sessions on relevant health and wellness topics for clients and the community.
Identify service gaps or emerging community needs and communicate findings to the Seabird Island Health Team for consideration and follow-up.
Reporting & Administrative Duties
Submit a monthly narrative report detailing activities to the Supervisor by the 5th of each month for the previous month.
Maintain professional, accurate, and up-to-date client records, ensuring all documentation complies with confidentiality standards.
Prepare and submit program schedules to the Supervisor two months in advance.
Participate in scheduled team meetings with Health, Mental Health, and other departmental staff as required.
Follow all relevant protocols and agreements, including the Xyolhemeylh Child and Family Protocol Agreement, and other applicable frameworks.
Other Duties
Additional responsibilities as needed to support the community and uphold our shared values.
Working / Special Conditions
Initial and ongoing employment is subject to submission of a clear Criminal Record Review Program Check to ensure the safety and trust of the communities we serve. This check will be conducted every five years.
Initial and ongoing commitment to the values and guidelines of Sq'éwqel (Seabird Island Band), including our policies, procedures, standards of practice, and laws, is essential. This commitment supports our collective work, the community, and the responsibilities of this role.
Must possess a valid class 5 driver's license and have access to safe and reliable transportation, insured for community-based use, to effectively transport clients.
Flexibility in working hours may be required, including evenings and weekends, to accommodate the needs and schedules of clients and community needs. Employees will be given as much notice as possible to any changes in schedule
What You Bring
Qualifications:
Diploma or Degree in Social Work, Human Services or related field required. We also recognize and value cultural knowledge and experience gained through other forms of education and training, including teachings from Elders and Knowledge Keepers.
Non-violent crisis intervention certificate an asset.
At least 1-2 years of relevant experience working within Indigenous communities, focusing on family services
Experience working with Indigenous communities and understanding of Indigenous cultures, traditions, and contemporary issues.
Excellent communication and relationship-building skills.
Ability to develop and maintain trusting, supportive, caring relationships with children and families.
Excellent problem-solving skills.
Excellent conflict resolution skills.
Ability to balance competing priorities and to work under pressure.
High professional and ethical standards.
Knowledge of family dynamics, addictions, and community resources.
Preferred:
Indigenous candidates are strongly encouraged to apply.
Lived experience as a member of a First Nations community.
Knowledge and understanding of Seabird Island’s culture, traditions, teachings, community dynamics.
Ability to respond quickly and professionally to community or colleague needs and inquiries.
Excellent writing, editing, and verbal communication skills.
Having knowledge of child protection issues and experience is an asset.
Cultural Competency:
Deep understanding of Indigenous cultures, traditions, and contemporary issues.
Understanding of intergenerational trauma and its impacts on Indigenous peoples and communities, and the ability to integrate this knowledge into client support, counseling, and service delivery.
Experience working within Indigenous communities and applying culturally safe practices.
