Senior Specialist, Data Engineering – Hybrid The Opportunity Do you have a strong passion for developing cloud-based data solutions that drive significant impact? The Alberta Energy Regulator (AER) is currently looking for a Senior Specialist, Data Engineering. This role will focus on modernizing and optimizing data flow across our IT solutions, thereby enhancing data collection, creation and management, advanced analytics, regulatory insights, and data-driven decision-making processes. As a Data Engineer, you will design, develop, and maintain scalable data pipelines and integration solutions using Microsoft Azure and Databricks technologies. Working closely with data architects, data modelers, solution teams, and business stakeholders, you’ll transform raw data into trusted assets — while contributing to AER’s strategic shift toward modern cloud-based platforms. What your day-to-day will look like: Build and optimize data pipelines using Azure-based tools (e.g., Data Factory, Databricks, Functions) to support enterprise data integration and analytics. Translate business requirements into robust technical solutions that align with AER’s data strategy and architecture standards. Ensure the performance, reliability, and scalability of data systems through best practices in engineering and DevOps. Collaborate with developers, analysts, and architects to maintain data consistency, quality, and governance across platforms. Participate in agile development processes, code reviews, automation, and CI/CD pipelines. Work on migrating/transforming legacy data workflows in Informatica to the new platform Support innovation through participation in proof-of-concepts and exploration of emerging data technologies. What we’re looking for in you: Bachelor’s degree in computer science, Software Engineering, or a related field. 5–7 years of experience in data engineering or integration, with cloud platform expertise. 3-4 years of experience and proficiency in Microsoft Azure data services (Data Factory, Databricks, Functions, Synapse, Storage). Proficiency in SQL, data modeling, and performance tuning for large-scale data pipelines and workflows. Hands-on experience with DevOps tools and practices, including version control (e.g., Git), CI/CD pipelines, and automated testing frameworks. Solid understanding of data quality, metadata management, data security, and governance principles. Experience supporting analytics and business intelligence platforms such as Tableau and Power BI, with a focus on preparing and integrating data to meet evolving reporting needs. Exposure to Informatica and participation in modernization or migration initiatives—particularly transitioning from Informatica-based solutions to Azure Databricks—is highly valued. Familiarity with enabling data science, AI, and machine learning initiatives through the development of optimized data pipelines is considered an asset. Knowledge of GIS systems and experience integrating spatial data into enterprise data platforms is beneficial.
