OVERVIEW
Vertex is looking for a dynamic and experienced Manager – Hydrogeology to lead a growing team based in either Sherwood Park or Calgary, Alberta. This is more than a management role—it’s a strategic leadership opportunity within our Liability Management division to shape the future of hydrogeological services at Vertex across Canada.
In this position, you’ll be responsible for technical excellence, team growth, and project delivery spanning diverse sectors including oil and gas, industrial, and commercial markets. You’ll lead a multidisciplinary team of project managers, field professionals, and technical specialists, while also driving innovation in both physical and contaminant hydrogeology.

CANDIDATE QUALIFICATIONS
B.Sc. or M.Sc. in Hydrogeology or a related physical science
Licensed Professional Engineer or Geoscientist in Alberta; ability to sign off in British Columbia/Saskatchewan is an asset
10+ years (15+ preferred) of hands-on hydrogeology project and execution experience
Proven client management skills including contract negotiation, conflict resolution, and business development
Demonstrated success in leading high-performing teams and aligning talent growth with business goals
Proficient in project planning, budgeting, scheduling, and stakeholder communication
Industry experience in oil and gas, manufacturing, energy, and industrial/commercial sectors; mining is a plus
In-depth knowledge of contaminated sites regulations in Alberta, British Columbia, and Saskatchewan; Ontario knowledge is an asset
Strong leadership and mentoring capabilities
RESPONSIBILITIES
Leadership & Personnel Management
Inspire, mentor, and develop team members to ensure strong technical execution and alignment with Vertex’s strategic goals
Support other Vertex managers primarily in Western Canada on hydrogeology related projects and addressing issues with technical outcomes relative to client objectives and Vertex standards
Collaborate with senior leaders to assess team needs and drive professional development initiatives
Client Management, Expectations, and Relationships
Represent Vertex as a subject matter expert, guiding client conversations and project execution
Build and maintain trusted relationships with clients through consistent delivery and proactive communication
Take ownership of hydrogeology project outcomes within Western Canada
Manage client relationships in alignment with Vertex’s senior management and business strategy
Business Development
Identify and pursue opportunities to expand service offerings based on evolving client and market needs
Oversee technical approach and pricing strategy for proposals and bids
Support regional growth by partnering with Vertex’s leaders across Canada
Process Improvement & Internal Operations
Work with the Director of Technical Services on improving efficiencies and enhancing service capabilities of the hydrogeology team
Foster a culture of continuous improvement and operational excellence that aligns with Vertex’s standards
Technical Requirements
Proficient in groundwater resource evaluation, contaminant hydrogeology, dewatering, and/or resource development
Knowledge of environmental regulations and ability to interpret and apply them effectively
Experience with groundwater modelling tools (e.g., MODFLOW, FEFLOW, Visual MODFLOW) is an asset
Skilled in hydrogeological baseline studies for environmental impact assessments
Expert in well design, pumping tests, hydrogeological mapping, and regulatory data reporting
Capable of addressing complex groundwater issues, including site assessment, remediation, and risk management
Adept at navigating regulatory pathways and developing design solutions and mitigation strategies
Experienced in implementing and reporting on groundwater monitoring programs across various industries
Confident in providing technical mentorship and reviewing/signing off on deliverables within your scope of practice

This position will be based out of either our Sherwood Park office or our Calgary office..
