Position Summary
UHN’s Perfusion Services supports Toronto’s biggest and busiest suite of ORs, conducting 1750 cardiac surgeries each year. The Perfusion Department actively involved in the Transplant (Heart, Lungs & Liver), Organ Regeneration, ECLS and Ventricular Assist Device Programs. Our suite of ORs incorporates state-of-the-art-technology to assist the surgical teams in handling the most complex cases. We have an environment where creativity and innovative case management are encouraged.
This is an opportunity to perform 20% direct patient care responsibilities and 80% educational responsibilities, supporting clinical education, supporting students, staff, and patients. DutiesParticipate in quality programs and initiatives of UHN, including but not limited too;Act as Lead for Perfusion-specific Quality of Care Initiative (multi-factorial project to improve care within the department)Advise and guide staff with ongoing clinical trials and quality control initiativesDevelop, maintain, and implement policies and proceduresAssist in investigating and resolving any perfusion-related errors or near missesCoordinate all training for new, existing, and returning perfusion employees, focused on UHN program growth and developmentParticipate in OR and ICU nursing, anesthesia fellow, surgical fellow and respiratory therapist orientation trainingParticipate in perfusion education at the Michener Institute of Education at UHNCoordinate all perfusion-related visitor observations/job shadowingAssist with VAD/ECLS knowledge translation for other provincial/ national/international hospitals starting and growing VAD and ECLS programAct as a Member of the UHN Clinical Education Committee (CLEC)Provide education/instruction for perfusion students, staff, fellows and other residentsMaintain a comprehensive knowledge of the cardiac, thoracic and surgical program curriculum and industry standards to facilitate the effective teaching of students, staff and visitorsMaintain a high standard of clinical practice knowledge, skill and ability to provide effective clinical education and support to students, staff and visitorsMaintenance of a high level of completed clinical cases as Primary Perfusionist per year; cover all Perfusion shifts and callQualificationsAt minimum, completion of a BSc degree with a diploma in Cardiovascular PerfusionMasters degree in relevant field, preferredCertification (or eligibility of certification) with the Canadian Society of Clinical Perfusion (CSCP)/or American Board of Clinical Perfusion (ABCP)At minimum 2 years practical and related experience as a Perfusionist in a hospital settingExperience working in a teaching hospital and/or acute care setting, an assetExperience creating and leading formal teaching plans, an asset Thorough knowledge of the theory and practice procedures, instruments, equipment, and special techniquesSpecialized knowledge of extracorporeal physiology and mechanics (both adult and pediatric) requiredKnowledge of applicable Hospital and departmental policies, procedures, guidelines, protocols and practicesExcellent judgement, problem recognition, and problem solving-skillsEffective time management skills with the ability to organize work and set priorities for self and othersHighly developed expertise and effective communication with all other health team members are essential in making the frequent, critical decisions required during the course of a bypass or other related perfusion proceduresAbility to work both effectively and accurately, adapting under stressful conditions in a fast-paced team environmentDemonstrated interest in continuing educationAdditional InformationWhy join UHN?In addition to working alongside some of the most talented and inspiring healthcare professionals in the world, UHN offers a wide range of benefits, programs and perks.
