Term: 18 months Pay Range: $74,207.00 - $93,648.00 Closes June 25, 2025 GENERAL ACCOUNTABILITY The Senior Adjuster (Property) is responsible for the day-to-day team leadership, of a claims unit and/or branch. This position counsels, trains, monitors, and assists subordinate staff in all procedural and technical aspects of their duties. The Senior Adjuster will oversee the claims process, provide expertise, and will handle claims of a complex/contentious nature when required. Work is performed with considerable independence and is subject to review only when specific limits are exceeded, or milestones/thresholds are met. KEY ACCOUNTABILITIES Note: This section is not intended to be an exhaustive list of duties and responsibilities – other duties and responsibilities may be assigned. Claims Administration and Adjusting Investigates, examines, negotiates, and settles complex property and commercial claims. Examines the policy and claim information to establish and adjust reserves for claims Assigns and provides direction to in-house adjusters, independent adjusters, legal counsel, and other service providers on claims when required. Approves claim payments entered by team members or independent adjusters Administers claim payments and settlements. Recognizes, determines, and pursues subrogation and salvage opportunities. Confirms coverage in accordance with policy wordings and applicable legislation and regulations. Responds to inquiries for challenging claims and advances to appropriate company representatives where added authority or input is required. Responds to complex issues arising through claims handling and reaches equitable resolutions. Prepares files for legal action and represents the interests of the company in legal proceedings and/or other judicial, legal institutional, or regulatory groups or bodies. Ensures required forms and documents are completed and maintains claim records and files in accordance with corporate standard and provincial regulations. Engages appropriate expertise when needed to assess risk and coverage application as per company guidelines. May conduct site visits to determine the scope of the damage or loss. Participates in the review and development of new products, procedures and programs. Evaluates and processes requests for payments from vendors. Collaborates with other business areas including the underwriting or business development teams to interpret coverage scope of policy wordings and apply interpretation to adjustment of claims. Claims Unit Coordination Responds to surveys, inquiries, escalations and/or complaints regarding coverage, the current status and disposition of claim files, claims settlements, and/or procedures, corporate policy, staff actions or conduct as required. Audits claims files and maintains adjuster production records ensuring that quality and quantity of work performed meets expected standards of performance. Supervises the preparation of claim files for legal action, further investigation, review by other personnel, and/or denial. Reviews, approves and/or issues payments on claims within authorized limits. Reviews and recommends adjustment of reserves in accordance with reporting requirements and procedures. Directs independent adjusters and lawyers in the assessment, negotiation, and settlement of claims. Provides direction on the assessment of negligence and/or the extent of quantum in claims of liability or bodily injury. Prepares and/or reviews and/or approves denials of coverage Collects, analyzes, and compiles data from various sources into reports as required. Collaborates with other business areas including the underwriting or business development teams to interpret coverage scope of policy wordings and apply interpretation to adjustment of claims. Team Leadership (Property Claims Support, Adjuster I’s & Adjuster II’s) (“Team leadership” applies only when the position has permanent accountability for the responsibilities listed below for a minimum of 3 employees.) Monitors and oversees the assignment of work. TECHNICAL KNOWLEDGE & SKILLS Advanced knowledge of the insurance coverages provided by SGI CANADA property policies, other related legislation, and case law related to Property claims. Advanced knowledge of insurance theory and the principles, practices, methods, and techniques related to the adjustment and settlement of claims, and determination of negligence, dependent upon the line(s) of insurance to which applying. Advanced skill in determining values, depreciation, and repair costs for loss or damage to property or vehicles, degree of negligence and/or the extent of injury to the customer dependent upon the line(s) of insurance to which applying. Advanced knowledge of the organization’s customer service initiatives and demonstrated skill in putting the customer at the center of business decisions. Proficient understanding of residential & commercial building construction components (e.g., Shingles, eavesdrops, drywall etc.) EDUCATION & CERTIFICATIONS Two-year diploma from an accredited post-secondary education institution in a relevant field of study such as Business, or defined equivalency. Possession of a valid driver's licence, in positions where required. EXPERIENCE 5 – 7 years’ experience in an insurance related role, with at least 3 years of property adjusting.
