The role is eligible for hybrid work options Division – Legal Apply by: June 27, 2025 General Accountability The successful candidate will provide support to the SGI Legal Division. Conducts legal research, drafts legal and corporate documents and assists with legal file management. Provides legal opinions for cases and assists with more complex litigation under the direction of Counsel, Senior Counsel, Regional Senior Counsel or VP Legal, including preparation for discovery/questioning, mediation, pre-trial and trial. Key Accountabilities Note: This section is not intended to be an exhaustive list of duties and responsibilities – other duties and responsibilities may be assigned. Litigation (40%) Prepares draft pleadings, motions, applications, facts, mediation memos, affidavits and witness statements to support Counsel. Provides assistance to Counsel for mediation preparation, pre-trial preparation and trial preparation. Organizes, summarizes and vets documents for legal production. Attends court when necessary (i.e. Motions, Trial Scheduling, Assignment Court, Small Claims Court). Accompanies and supports Counsel at Discovery/Questioning, Mediations, Pre-trials and Trials. Corporate (10%) Drafts and reviews corporate legal documents such as contracts, leases, NDA’s, intellectual property applications and procurement documents. Assists with due diligence by reviewing and summarizing legal and business documents to ensure accuracy, compliance and alignment with corporate objectives. Conducts corporate research from corporation's branch, ISC and Trademark office. Legal Research and Legal Opinions (30%) Conducts in-depth legal research and prepares legal briefs at the direction of counsel on issues such as legislative or contractual interpretation, liability, quantification of damages, privacy, information management, procurement and court process. Provides ad hoc, oral and written legal advice to business partners (primarily Claims) on an as needed basis under the direction and supervision of the VP Legal or Regional Senior Counsel. Assists in coordinating and organizing legal precedents. Leadership (10%) Actively contributes to and supports a culture of a high performing workforce. Participates in divisional succession plans, ensuring ongoing professional and career development and supports development in others. Supports a culture of leadership and accountability to effectively deliver on strategic and corporate strategies. Is actively committed to leadership development across the company, supporting team and workforce readiness through mentoring, training and developmental opportunities. Corporate Management (10%) Enables the success of programs and policies that are in alignment with corporate, strategic and divisional strategies. Manages risk in area of authority. Ensures that the Health, Safety and Emergency Management Policy is applied in area of responsibility. Education and Experience A record of academic excellence. Prior to interviewing for position must have completed two (2) years at a common law program offered by a law school in Canada that is approved by the Law Society in the region where position will be located. Prior to starting position must have graduated with either a Bachelor of Laws (LL.B.) or Juris Doctor (J.D.). Eligible to write bar examination in region where position will be located. For Internationally Trained Lawyers: Must have had their legal education credentials evaluated and approved by the Law Society for the region in which they will be principally employed. Six months to one year of relevant experience. Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Knowledge of substantive and procedural laws. Knowledge of the rules and responsibilities surrounding legal ethics. Knowledge of the practices and procedures of all levels of courts in the applicable jurisdiction. Knowledge of litigation procedures and processes, including the Rules of Civil Procedure. Knowledge of the functions and jurisdictions of local, provincial and federal courts and agencies. Knowledge of the terminology, principles and procedures of Canadian insurance law. Ability to handle information of the strictest confidence in a professional manner, work within specific time constraints and adapt to changing priorities.
