PAYROLL AND TOTAL REWARDS MANAGER (ST THOMAS, ON – ONSITE) Come build the future with us! WHAT YOU WILL DO: Reporting to the VP, Human Resources, the Payroll and Total Rewards Manager leads the team responsible for delivering an exceptional employee experience through the provision of timely and accurate payroll services and total rewards programs. Responsible for managing payroll-related risk, this position will develop, document, and assess the controls and systems used to ensure payroll activities are delivered in compliance with associated regulations, legislation, and internal control standards. This role manages the Payroll and Total Rewards function, partnering closely with the Human Resources team to maintain accurate data and reporting, while contributing to policy development and implementation. Payroll Operations & Compliance Oversee end-to-end payroll administration for hourly and salaried employees across the organization. Ensure compliance with Canadian and provincial payroll regulations, tax filings, and statutory remittances. Design, implement, and maintain internal payroll and total rewards controls and compliance. Conduct regular reconciliations and audits in partnership with stakeholders. Prepare payroll reporting and audit documentation to ensure year-end compliance. Strengthen internal control frameworks to safeguard payroll data integrity and benefits administration. Compensation, Benefits & Total Rewards Strategy Design and deliver competitive Total Rewards strategies aligned with market data, organizational goals, and talent strategies. Lead annual compensation cycles, including merit increases, bonuses, benchmarking, and job evaluations. Oversee benefits, vacation, and all other total rewards programs, ensuring alignment and impact across all employee segments. Partner with Talent and HR team to support salary adjustments, benefit enhancements, and lifecycle compensation events. Participation in union contract negotiations, providing calculations and costs for various scenarios presented. Collaboration & Financial Alignment Collaborate with Finance to ensure cost estimation, annual budgeting, accrual tracking, and reconciliation of payroll and benefits. Work with external vendors to ensure plan competitiveness, accuracy of billing, and contract management. Maintain appropriate documentation, governance, and data integrity for audit readiness. Employee Education & Communication Develop and deliver clear employee communications on total rewards programs, policies, and updates. Champion awareness and understanding of rewards and payroll practices through ongoing education and touchpoints. Partner with leaders and the HR team to ensure equitable and informed conversations on compensation recommendations, salary adjustments, benefit enhancements, and lifecycle compensation events. Systems Optimization & Process Improvement Serve as payroll and rewards SME; troubleshoot issues, recommend systems enhancements, and lead integrations (e.g., Kronos, Workday). Identify and implement workflow improvements and automation to streamline processes. WHAT YOU WILL BRING: QUALIFICATIONS & EDUCATION Diploma or Degree in HR, Accounting, Finance, Business Administration, or related field Professional certification preferred PCP/CPM, CEBS, or CHRP. CRITICAL EXPERIENCE & COMPETENCIES 8+ years of payroll and total rewards experience, including 5+ years in a managerial role with strong leadership skills Experience with multi-provincial payroll, pensions, and government remittances Proficiency in payroll systems (e.g., Kronos, WorkDay), HRIS platforms and advanced Excel skills Experience working with Financial Services Regulatory Authority of Ontario (FSRA) Strong knowledge of payroll regulations and tax laws (federal and provincial) Familiarity with reporting, audits, and policy development Strong attention to detail, accuracy, and advanced project management skills Excellent analytical and problem-solving abilities, with a continuous improvement mindset Effective communication and collaboration across departments Ability to ensure confidentiality and compliance in all payroll and total rewards activities WHO YOU ARE: A Strong Leader & Team Builder – Motivates, develops, and drives accountability within a large workforce.
