JOB SUMMARY The Clinical Research Coordinator contributes to Dr. Prisman’s research lab in head and neck reconstruction technology by ensuring the smooth functioning of the day-to-day research operations of the lab. The incumbent will be involved with research unit organization, supporting clinical research projects and trials and providing financial support for the clinical research activities in the lab. ORGANIZATIONAL STATUS The UBC Faculty of Medicine Department of Surgery educates students at the undergraduate, graduate and postgraduate levels, and pursues research to make innovative advancements in knowledge and practice to improve health. The Department consists of more than 600 physicians, surgeons, scientists and educators and over 70 administrative, research and technical staff in nine divisions distributed across British Columbia. There are nine divisions in the following specialties: Cardiac Surgery, General Surgery, Neurosurgery, Otolaryngology, Pediatric Surgery, Plastic Surgery, Radiation Oncology, Thoracic Surgery and Vascular Surgery. The Department is also home to the Branch for Global Surgical Care (BGSC). This position reports to the Principal Investigator, Dr. Eitan Prisman. The Clinical Research Coordinator liaises with faculty and staff within the Department of Surgery as well faculty members and staff in the Faculty of Applied Science as well as healthcare professionals and medical trainees. WORK PERFORMED • Assist with the application for ethics and operational approvals as well as address amendments and certificate renewals as needed by providing support and oversight to the clinical co-op students. • Assist with different clinical and surgical technology research projects by performing tasks ranging from study conceptualization, data collection, and data analysis. • Assist with the coordination and research administration of the lab’s internal studies and studies in collaboration with other sites by liaising with other PIs and coordinators to ensure all ethical guidelines and protocols are adhered to. • Liaise with graduate students, residents, and medical students to ensure adequate resources for their research projects. • Assist with the lab’s grant applications by collating necessary documents and references, obtaining signatures, spellchecking, etc. and write sections of the grant proposal for UBC, provincial, and national grants. • Assist with the preparation of interim and final reports for grants and other funding bodies. • Maintain accurate and up-to-date financial records for all research activities in the lab, including submitting purchase requisitions and cheque requisitions for reimbursement and updating the budget for each grant. • Schedule, organize, and lead weekly research meetings in the lab and organize bi-weekly meetings of the larger ISTAR collaborative research group. • Interview and recommend candidates to PI for hiring of co-op students, work learn students,. • Work with trainees and other laboratory staff and troubleshoot procedures if needed. • Supervise and train of students working in the lab. • Organize and participate in research review meetings for the Unit • Assist the PI in preparing presentations on different projects or overview of the lab’s research at conferences, research events, etc. • Assist with writing technical reports and manuscripts for publication in peer-reviewed journals. • Performs other related duties as required. WORKING CONDITIONS This position is based in a clinical office environment on the Vancouver General Hospital campus, in the Diamond Health Care Centre. CONSEQUENCE OF ERROR/JUDGEMENT The incumbent will work under general supervision. Informal reports will be made regularly to the Principal Investigator. The incumbent must be willing to pay attention to details, be aware of pitfalls and willing to repeat tasks if necessary. The incumbent will improve upon existing protocols and provide input into the direction of the laboratory. Errors in judgment may result in less efficient patient care, insufficient progress of research projects, adversely affecting funding for studies and the scope of other members’ learning experiences. Inappropriate handling of interactions and communications could create embarrassment for the Prisman Lab, the Division of Otolaryngology, and Department of Surgery in dealings with faculty, students, University, affiliated hospitals, patients, business affiliates, and the public. SUPERVISION RECEIVED The candidate reports directly the Principal Investigator, Dr. Eitan Prisman. SUPERVISION GIVEN Co-op students and may supervise work learn student. MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS • High school graduation, some additional training in a related field and a minimum two years of related experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience. • Willingness to respect diverse perspectives, including perspectives in conflict with one’s own. • Demonstrates a commitment to enhancing one’s own awareness, knowledge, and skills related to equity, diversity, and inclusion.
