Job Summary The Associate Student Recruiter-Advisor, Indigenous Students plays an important role in the advancement of Indigenous peoples’ human rights and UBC’s commitment to reconciliation, as articulated and called for by the Truth and Reconciliation Commission of Canada. The position works with the broader Student Recruitment and Advising team to foster access, success and representation at UBC of historically underserved, marginalized or excluded populations with a specific focus on Indigenous learners. The focus of the position is a connection with Indigenous learners via a number of on-campus programs including group tours of the Vancouver campus (along with the supervision of two Indigenous Student Ambassadors), Indigenous Grade 12 Day, and Indigenous Experience UBC. This position may also represent the University of British Columbia (Okanagan and Vancouver campuses) at Strengthening Connections, high school visits, and community events with a higher proportion of Indigenous students. This role implements recruitment programs and advising services for secondary and post-secondary school students, parents, educational advocates and counsellors in Canada for the purpose of encouraging qualified prospective students to seek admission to UBC. Specifically, the focus of the position is to encourage Indigenous learners to consider post-secondary in general and to see UBC as a welcoming place. The position plays a critical role in organizing and implementing programming that brings Indigenous students to the Vancouver campus. Advises students with secondary and post-secondary credentials concerning UBC admission criteria and specific program requirements for admission to UBC undergraduate programs on both campuses. This position is located on our Vancouver campus and works in close collaboration with Okanagan campus colleagues and Indigenous Programs and Services and the First Nations House of Learning staff on each campus. Organizational Status The Associate Student Recruiter-Advisor, Indigenous Students reports directly to the Associate Director, Student Recruitment and Advising. This position may be required to travel throughout BC. Work Performed 1. Represents UBC accurately and inclusively to Indigenous learners, parents, and counsellors/ advocates through in-person and online visits to secondary schools, band schools and community organizations by: Delivering UBC recruitment presentations and discussions in small and large group settings, using multimedia materials and other collateral Building strong relationships and trust with institutions, community organizations that work primarily with Indigenous youth, and individuals Demonstrating effective and inclusive communication with students, parents, educational advocates and counsellors in presentation settings, one-on-one advising, telephone inquiries and email correspondence, social media and online sessions. Sharing UBC’s commitment to inclusive excellence and the resources available to empower students to achieve their educational goals. Responding to student inquiries and providing prospective Indigenous students with the appropriate contacts and resources. 2. Advise prospective students by: Providing information on all aspects of academic program options, application, admission, registration, housing, awards and financial assistance, extracurricular activities, campus resources and orientation to UBC. Appling knowledge and understanding of complex requirements and policies in making appropriate responses and offer advice based on individual assessment of each situation. Representing UBC’s welcoming community and positive engagement with all students, particularly students who self-identify as Indigenous Be the key point of contact for the Indigenous Langara Transfer partnership supporting students in this pathway program 3. Contributes to the development and delivery of programs with the guidance and support of the Indigenous Student Recruitment Advising team including: Indigenous Experience UBC programs, Indigenous Grade 12 Days, and Destination UBC on both campuses of UBC The coordination and scheduling of the Indigenous-specific group tours and associated value-added programming Additional activities for Indigenous learners as required 4. Undertakes additional student recruitment and advising activities as required. Consequence of Error/Judgement Advising Indigenous students, advocates, and educators incorrectly could have serious and costly consequences for the prospective student and damage the relations of UBC with Indigenous communities or organizations. Must be able to sensitively and appropriately advise students experiencing multiple barriers to post-secondary participation, often working through complex UBC policies to find optimal solutions. Must employ tact and diplomacy in interactions with prospective Indigenous students and their parents, with community leaders, with educators and institutional representatives as well as with faculty and staff at UBC. Supervision Received The Associate Student Recruiter-Advisor, Indigenous Students must be comfortable working independently with a mixture of time in the SRA office and working remotely, in addition to a potential travel schedule. The position will receive ongoing training, support, and supervision. The individual must exercise initiative, diplomacy, tact, resourcefulness, cultural sensitivity and sound judgment when representing the University. Supervision Given None. Minimum Qualifications - Willingness to respect diverse perspectives, including perspectives in conflict with one’s own - Demonstrates a commitment to enhancing one’s own awareness, knowledge, and skills related to equity, diversity, and inclusion Preferred Qualifications Undergraduate degree in a relevant discipline. One year of related experience, or equivalent combination of education and experience. Knowledge of Indigenous culture, worldviews and lived experiences combined with a strong commitment to advancing the educational aspirations of Indigenous peoples. Successful applicants will have strong communication, organization, and time-management skills. Good organization and administrative skills and be highly independent and self-motivated. Public speaking experience is preferred. Knowledge of UBC’s programs of study and campus resources is an asset. Must be willing to work a flexible schedule including some evenings and weekends. Should hold a valid driver’s license with a clean driving record and be willing to travel within BC. UBC will cover the associated travel costs.
