Job Summary The Security Coordinator is a uniformed position, responsible for supervising the day-to-day departmental operations and for the overall coordination of the on-duty security operations team in a 24 hours per day, 7 days per week security operation. The Security Coordinator ensures that operational targets are met, security services are delivered in a professional manner, and that customer service standards are upheld. They are responsible for efficient deployment of resources, effective communication, decision making, and escalation pertaining to all aspects of the campus’ operations program. Additionally, they lead and mentor security patrol staff, fostering a collaborative environment that promotes professional growth and high performance. Organizational Status The Security Coordinator reports to the Manager, Security Operations, and has oversight of supporting staff, including security patrol. Work Performed Supervises the overall day-to-day operations of the Campus Security (CS) Department that includes security patrol staff working in various campus locations, establishing daily priorities, ensuring that events are resourced and managed, including scheduling and administrative duties as required. This requires working with other campus security units and other campus departments, as required. Coordinates with other security coordinators on communication sharing, file tracking, documentation, developing systems, and hand over processes. Provide supervision to a designated team of security patrol staff, coaching and mentoring employees, creating a learning environment that promotes and supports professional growth of all employees; oversees recruitment, orientation and training activities. Monitors orientation program evaluation ensuring training needs, role and site requirements are met. Promotes a safe and healthy working environment by implementing equity, diversity, and inclusion principles, building trust to create a respectful environment. Coordinate response to escalated security incidents, while prioritizing safety and compliance with institutional policies. Provide support and guidance to team members during critical situations. This may include conducting interviews, collection and preservation of evidence, and preparation of incident reports for internal review and potential legal proceedings. Provide trauma-informed services in response to incidents, including conducting intake meetings, engaging in client interactions with sensitivity, and delivering support tailored to individual needs. Ensure compliance with Occupational First Aid Level 3 (OFA3) regulations, including the organization and execution of regular drills, provision of first aid treatment, and routine audits. Oversee equipment verification, maintain accurate records, and coordinate ongoing training. Reviews incident reports and shift logs to identify occurrences of concern; analyzes data to identify trends and recommend mitigation strategies. Utilizes this information to generate shift briefings for Patrol staff, assigning daily duties and deploying resources effectively. Coordinate file referrals, conduct violence risk triage, and escalate critical incidents to management, emergency services, or campus partners in alignment with the Critical Incident Notification Program. Reviews all operational reports to ensure completeness of information, ensuring that departmental records are maintained according to established policy and procedures. Monitors bulletins, timesheets, incident/radio reports, inspection and audits logs, and safety inspection records, escalating identified issues or trends to management staff. Ensure operational targets and customer service standards are met by overseeing job assignments, coaching staff for improved performance, and promptly escalating issues to management when necessary. Facilitate clear and effective communication and information sharing among the security team, other departments, management, and the university community to ensure cohesive and timely responses to security concerns and incidents. Collaborate with and support event management, including development and creating operational plans, to ensure the safety and security and adequate resourcing of all planned or ad hoc campus events. Assesses emergency and non-emergency situations and takes appropriate action to safeguard the well-being of staff and the University’s resources by responding to emergency and non-emergency situations on campus; liaises with the RCMP, Fire Department and other emergency services as required. Acts as incident commander as appropriate. Develop and implement safety plans for team deployments, considering potential risks and ensuring all safety protocols are adhered to. Conduct pre-deployment briefings and post-deployment reviews to continuously enhance internal safety measures. Contribute to the development of operational plans by providing input, drafting documentation, and overseeing the deployment of resources. Monitor compliance to court-imposed conditions or restrictions, reporting any violations, take action on existing controls and coordinating with legal and law enforcement agencies as necessary. Coordinate and provides guidance to contracted security services, when required. Provides regular updates to Campus Security management regarding security incidents, ongoing investigations, team performance, project/status updates, and any identified risks or vulnerabilities. Works with CS management supporting incident follow ups and triage intake of risk, threat, and harassment files. Takes an active role in position related projects, including implementing security initiatives, while fostering a culture of continuous improvement and accountability within the team. Provides input and gathers relevant information to assist management in the preparation of the annual budget. Participates with Campus Security management in the development/amendment and implementation of departmental procedures, standards and guidelines, provides suggestions for operational improvements and works closely with Patrol teams to ensure compliance with established policies and procedures. Carry out responsibilities in accordance with health and safety requirements. Immediately report unsafe situations by notifying supervisor or other appropriate personnel. Participates in Safety Committees and working groups activities as assigned and ensures that Campus Security staff follows the University’s Health and Safety policies. Performs other related duties as required in keeping with the qualifications and requirements of positions in this classification. Consequence of Error/Judgement The Security Coordinator is expected to make decisions with a collaborative and community-focused approach, with limited guidance. Makes planning related decisions related to staff, equipment and other resources availability; inappropriate direction and utilization of staff may impact service and safety people and buildings. Supervision Received The Security Coordinator works independently with considerable autonomy, under the general direction of the Manager, Security Operations. This position is empowered to make decisions in areas where no established policy applies, with the support of leadership consultation when necessary. Supervision Given The Security Coordinator supervises a team of patrol staff consisting of Assistant Security Coordinators and patrol staff deployed in a variety of roles and settings on campus; assists in staff selection, orientation, training, and development. Minimum Qualifications High School graduation, completion of BC Securities Services Act training requirements for obtaining a BC Security License, Advanced First Aid Certification (OFA 3), a valid BC Driver’s license, Advanced Security Training (AST), Mental Health First Aid (MHFA) and a minimum five years of security industry experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience. - Minimum of 5 years security industry experience, with a minimum of 2 years in a supervisory capacity. - Completion of all UBC and Campus Security department issued training, i.e., Naloxone, Equity, Diversity and Inclusion training. - Ability to work a rotating schedule, as assigned. - Proven experience managing and leading people, preferably in a unionized environment. - Effective oral and written communication, interpersonal, supervisory, leadership and organizational skills. - Ability to exercise sound judgement - Willingness to respect diverse perspectives, including perspectives in conflict with one’s own - Demonstrates a commitment to enhancing one’s own awareness, knowledge, and skills related to equity, diversity, and inclusion - Sound working knowledge and proficiency in utilizing computer systems and software applications for operational efficiency and data management. Preferred Qualifications - Post-secondary degree or certificate in a related field, or related training, plus a minimum of five years of relevant experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience. - Professional Certification and/or membership related to the role is an asset (CPP/APP, for example). - Experience or certification in Critical Incident Stress Management and Peer Training (CISM), trauma informed approach. - Ability to deal with a diverse group of people in a calm, courteous, and effective manner. - Excellent organizational skills. - Ability to effectively manage organizational resources. - Ability to schedule large staff groups in accordance with operational needs, budget and the collective agreement. - Ability to effectively recruit, train, supervise and motivate employees. - Ability to explain, assign and monitor work. - Ability to analyze problems, identify key information and effectively resolve issues. - Ability to foster the long-term learning and development of staff through coaching.
