Calendar Description: A structured investigation of architectural concepts; program interpretation with respect to relevant cultural, social and environmental contexts; applications of appropriate formal languages and building technologies in integrated proposals for a variety of building forms. Canadian Architectural Certification Board (CACB) Student Performance Criteria (SPC): A1, A2, A4, A5, A6 Topic and themes: Matter(s) of building: Radical Adaptive Reuse and Climate Retrofit. The studio will critically consider the adaptive re-use of buildings and building materials. The inquiry begins with precedent studies and design theory lectures (A1) alongside the analysis, modeling, and virtual disassembling of an existing building. The studio will approach the design of a new/reconfigured building through a given material ecology derived from this exercise (A2). The objective of this novel design approach is to reduce the environmental impact through a radical adaptive reuse strategy utilizing salvaged materials from an existing building. Program is de-emphasized as an initial constraint and its prevalence as a design driver critically re-assessed (A4). The existing building’s technosphere and site (A5) are the primary drivers of its proposed reconfiguration and detailed design proposition for the final review. Coordination: Please note that to better coordinate and manage student workload, instructors will be expected to work closely with colleagues ahead of the semester to confirm scope, schedule, and assignments. Deadlines and tests will be finalized with the larger team and following conversations regarding resources and technical support. Studio coordinator: Prof. Michael Jemtrud Please note: This studio will be team taught which means that multiple instructors will be assigned to teach this course. Instructors may work with multiple different groups of students throughout the term.
