The TRIUMF DAQ group is responsible for the data acquisition for experiments at TRIUMF and around the world. This work involves developing the data acquisition conceptual design, writing the read-out software and helping the experiments with the DAQ commissioning. We manage locally close to 100 computers dedicated to data acquisitions. We also provide consulting expertise to off-site physics experiments in the form of DAQ concept, implementation, and deployment based on the MIDAS DAQ software package. The position is responsible for providing overall Data Acquisition software development and support to the local and external physics community. The Data Acquisition Specialist plays a crucial role in preparation, implementation and operation of physics experiments at TRIUMF. RESPONSIBILITIES: Provide Data Acquisition support for hardware and software deployment to a wide set of local and offsite experiments, with a particular focus on facilitating the overall DAQ teams efforts on the flagship TRIUMF ARIEL project. Given the needs for experimental support we expect the candidate to be working on-site at TRIUMF for at least 50% of days. Develop Data Acquisition readout programs for a wide variety of custom and specialized electronics and detectors, often working closely with the TRIUMF electronics development group. Participate in the development and maintenance of the custom MIDAS DAQ system software package. Maintain hardware, operating systems and software for the large and varied DAQ computer cluster, with a special emphasis on enforcing and augmenting cybersecurity. Develop web tools and scripts for the DAQ group and wider TRIUMF community. Maintain proper documentation on all aspects of their work for operation and traceability. KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS: Key required skills: Excellent knowledge of the Linux operating system and its configuration tools. Good knowledge of C, C++ and python programming. Familiar with scripting languages such as bash, Perl, Python Familiar with Web-based languages such as HTML5, CSS, JS Familiar with consumer PC electronics components and specifications. Demonstrate a sense of timeliness in completing tasks. Resourceful and showing initiative in their work. Eager to contribute to projects with a positive attitude, good team spirit. Good verbal and written communication skills; good ability to work with members of an international collaboration Additional valuable skills: Experience with Linux cybersecurity best-practices. Experience in data acquisition, experimental design, and instrument operation within a research and laboratory setting; particularly valuable to have experience with MIDAS DAQ framework. Experience with SQL-based database deployment, use and maintenance. Knowledge of basic analog and digital electronics. Experience with producing clear technical documentation. Effective communication skills to collaborate with diverse teams and convey technical concepts clearly. SUPERVISION EXERCISED: While the position has no direct supervisory responsibilities, the DAQ analyst may provide technical oversight or guidance to technicians and undergraduate students working on sub-systems or modules. MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS AND YEARS OF EXPERIENCE: Bachelor's degree in a relevant scientific or engineering field (e.g., physics, engineering physics, computer science, etc.) with at least 4 years of experience. Advanced degrees are a plus. Applicants must be legally able to work in Canada on a permanent basis (Canadian Citizen or Permanent Resident).
