The Canada Privacy Officer helps execute the Firm’s Enterprise Privacy Program, with a primary focus on the Firm’s Canadian operations, reporting directly to the Deputy Chief Privacy Officer (“DCPO”). The Canada Privacy Officer’s role is to serve as the Firm’s subject matter expert on Canadian privacy matters and to execute the Enterprise Privacy Program strategy within our Canadian operations to maintain demonstrable compliance. The Canada Privacy Officer will serve as the primary point of contact within the Privacy Office for routine matters regarding Canadian operations and privacy compliance, including privacy impact assessments, contracting questions, cross-border data transfer questions, and due diligence inquiries. Responsibilities: Canada – Enterprise Privacy Program Alignment & Execution Primary responsibility for execution and alignment of RSM’s enterprise privacy program within the Firm’s Canadian operations. Participates in the strategic evolution and implementation of the Enterprise Privacy Program within Canada and ensures quantifiable risk parameters are included within policies and procedures. Supports enforcement of Enterprise Privacy Program by collaborating with the Chief Privacy Officer (“CPO”) and DCPO to develop and maintain metrics for internal reporting. Serves as a strategic business advisor and partner to our Firm, developing close relationships and a deep understanding of the needs of our clients, business, and talent at all levels of our Firm. Creates specific trainings, policies and standards, guidance documents and practice aids, and tailors enterprise privacy program materials to meet the needs of our Canadian clients, talent, and other stakeholders. Provides pragmatic, business-minded advice on new product and service developments to expedite speed to market, accelerate digital velocity, and enhance digital experiences. Serves as the primary point of contact within the Privacy Office for routine matters involving Canadian privacy obligations. Monitors and evaluates new and existing Canadian, U.S., and global privacy laws and obligations, as well as industry best practices, and serves as a trusted business advisor to RSM. Participates on the execution of strategic priorities relative to new and existing privacy laws and obligations. Collaborates with internal stakeholders to foster a culture of privacy awareness and compliance. Supports and champions the Privacy by Design program. Primary responsibility for operationalizing lawful cross-border data transfers of Canadian data, including assessment of legal bases and instruments for such transfers and related certifications. Provides support on internal investigations into potential violations or non-conformities with applicable privacy laws, standards, and policies and recommends remediations. Champions and supports governance, compliance, and risk management programs in adjacent areas. Assists with maintenance and implementation of privacy governance, risk and compliance programs, and privacy-enhancing technologies. Supports other aspects of the enterprise privacy program as needed. Administrative Duties Develops reports and dashboards for key performance indicators. Incident Response Address potential privacy incident response(s) for routine matters involving Canadian personal data, including establishing reasonable measures to prevent recurrence. Other duties as assigned Education/Certifications: Bachelor’s Degree – Required Juris Doctorate or equivalent – Required CIPP/C, CIPM, CIPT, or similar privacy certifications – Preferred Experience: Active license in good standing to practice law – Required Ability to effectuate change at all levels of the Firm– Required Demonstratable knowledge of Canadian domestic and global data privacy laws and regulations – Required Minimum 7 years as a practicing attorney – Preferred Experience with building a global privacy program – Preferred Experience with OneTrust or other privacy related software – Preferred Experience with domestic and international privacy incident response – Preferred Technical Skills: Excellent conflict resolution and negotiation skills – Required Ability to influence change and champion all privacy initiatives within the Firm – Required Strong organizational skills, attention to detail, and interpersonal communication skills – Required Strong analytical, legal, and problem-solving skills – Required Able to work harmoniously and effectively with others – Required Able to preserve confidentiality and exercise discretion – Required Able to work under pressure and manage multiple projects with competing deadlines and priorities Leadership Skills: Exceptional business and legal judgement, with the ability to think strategically and give practical advice by balancing business needs with legal risk – Required Strong managerial, communications, analytical, organizational, project management, and planning skills (required) Note: This is a remote opportunity open to Canada. The salary range (or starting rate for interns and associates) for this role represents numerous factors considered in the hiring decisions including, but not limited to, education, skills, work experience, certifications, location, etc. As such, pay for the successful candidate(s) could fall anywhere within the stated range.
