The Residential Driver will be responsible for safely, efficiently, and courteously providing waste removal services to customers. The driver will collect solid waste or recyclables on curbside and/or backdoor routes and transporting to post-collection facilities. Key Responsibilities: Operate residential and/or recycling collection vehicles including side-load or rear-load trucks and associated hydraulic systems on assigned routes. Safely load solid waste, yard waste, and recyclables into the truck and operate compaction equipment. Perform thorough pre-trip and post-trip inspections; complete all required documentation (e.g., route sheets, safety checklists, daily truck reports). Identify and tag prohibited waste items; remove items from waste containers as required. Report any mechanical issues immediately to maintenance and supervisor. Maintain cleanliness of the vehicle interior and exterior. Ensure compliance with all company, local, provincial/state, and federal safety regulations and procedures. Maintain route quality and efficiency standards. Supervise and manage assigned Helper(s), if applicable. Attend all required safety and team meetings. Wear all required personal protective equipment (PPE) at all times. Respond professionally to public and customer interactions while on route. Maintain accurate service records and inventory of carts/containers. Assist in improving routing efficiency and recommend inventory needs to the supervisor. Perform other duties as assigned by management. Overtime may be required. Requirements: High school diploma or GED preferred. Valid Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) is required. Minimum of 1 year of commercial driving experience OR completion of a recognized CDL training program. Ability to meet the physical and safety requirements of a safety-sensitive position. Proven ability to operate collection trucks and equipment safely. Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities: Understanding of truck components and basic maintenance requirements. Skilled in maneuvering vehicles in tight, high-traffic spaces using mirrors and spatial awareness. Ability to identify and avoid unacceptable waste (e.g., flammable materials). Strong communication skills with both internal team members and external customers. Capable of reading and interpreting maps, instructions, and documentation. Ability to adapt to change, solve problems, and seek continuous improvement. Physically able to repetitively lift up to 50 lbs, using proper lifting techniques. Strong coordination and motor skills for operating equipment and driving safely. Committed to following all company safety policies and procedures. Physical & Mental Demands: Frequent standing, walking, reaching, kneeling, climbing, and bending. Visual acuity to operate vehicles and observe surroundings in varied conditions. Regularly lift/move up to 10 lbs; frequently up to 25 lbs; occasionally up to 100 lbs. Prolonged sitting (up to 75% of the shift) while operating vehicles. Capable of working in high noise and fast-paced environments. Working Conditions: Outdoor work in all weather conditions (heat, cold, rain, snow). Regular exposure to loud noise, moving parts, fumes, chemicals, and vibrations. Constant driving in motor vehicle traffic and occasional work at elevated heights.
