HDR is seeking a Civil Technologist to join our Transportation – Construction and Field Services team to work on class 1 railway construction projects. As this role is primarily construction-based field work, it requires working nights, weekends, and extended shifts. The work also tends to be seasonal in nature and as such, the successful candidate will also have the ability to work on projects in the office supporting the design or coordination under the project manager.
In the role of Civil Technologist, we'll count on you to:
Provide oversight and construction inspection on Class 1 railway projects;
Maintain accurate daily diary entries to document construction progress and completion of contract documentation records;
Maintain daily photographic records, and videos as necessary to document construction and site activities;
Keep records of completed work for tracking bid items and material quantities for payment;
Complete daily inspections in accordance with client requirements and expectations;
Monitor that construction work is in accordance with contract documents and specifications;
Monitor the contractor’s compliance to health and safety, and environmental regulations and legislation;
Supervise and implement quality assurance acceptance and inspection of construction works;
Monitor and report on construction progress in relation to a project schedule, noting any delays or impacts;
Report to the Project Manager onsite activities, concerns, and non-conformances, and provide recommendations for resolution;
Provide mentorship to junior staff;
Liaise with client representatives, as required;
Other duties as assigned.
Preferred Qualifications
Post-secondary degree/diploma in Civil Engineering and/or relevant large infrastructure construction experience.
Minimum 5-10 years of construction engineering experience.
Eligibility for registration as Certified Engineering Technologist
Demonstrated experience in construction and/or construction inspection of heavy civil infrastructure that may include highway, bridges, buildings or railroads
Ability and willingness to work overtime including nights, weekends and holidays to meet project schedules (expect a discussion with assigned supervisor to maintain a positive work/life balance)
Ability to read and interpret construction drawings.
Experience with Autodesk's suite of products, specifically Civil 3D
Experience with GPS or Total Station Surveying considered an asset.
Valid license with an acceptable driving record, and access to a reliable vehicle.
Required Qualifications
High School diploma or equivalent
A minimum of 3 years experience
Proficient with MS Office (Word/Excel/Outlook)
Proven problem-solving and documentation abilities
Ability to work independently and as part of a team
