The payroll department is responsible for managing and processing pay for more
than 7,000 permanent and temporary university employees on a bi-weekly cycle.
The entire payroll operation ensures that employees are paid accurately and on
time. Responsibilities include salary and wage calculations; deductions and
remittances; regulatory compliance; pay distribution via direct deposit; record
keeping and financial reporting. Payroll provides customer support to both
employees and SFU’s faculty and departmental administrators. By performing these
tasks, the payroll team has a critical role in managing one of the university's
largest expenses.
About the Role
Receives and processes payroll appointments and changes to employment records
for a designated employee group. Responds in a timely manner to all requests for
Employment Insurance (EI)-Records of Employment, Verifications of Employment.
Ensures payroll data is accurate and according to University policies, practices
and procedures. Processes and reconciles designated employee payroll deductions.
Processes Personnel Action Requisitions (PAR) and all Fund 11/12 Payroll
Appointment Forms to accurately setup the accounting charges in the department
budget table. Reviews biweekly payroll error report and processes corrections.
Processes Temporary Foreign worker Payroll Appointment Forms to ensure key data
fields are captured and verified prior to being added to Payroll.
Responds to routine e-mail and in-person general inquires related to payroll,
responding directly with information regarding procedures covering issues such
as deadlines, appointment status, updates, etc. and refers complex or unusual
problems to appropriate staff for resolution in a timely manner.

Qualifications
High school graduation and one year of post-secondary education or formal
program equivalent including Payroll Compliance Practitioner (PCP) certification
through the Canadian Payroll Association. 3 years of related experience. An
equivalent combination of formal education, certificate/program of study and
experience is acceptable.
- Excellent knowledge of the practices and principles involved in completing an
annual payroll cycle.
- Excellent knowledge of, and the ability to apply, federal and provincial
legislation to payroll including: the Canada Pension Plan; the Employment
Insurance Act; the Income Tax Act; Employment Standards legislation; and
WorkSafe BC legislation.
- Ability to use spreadsheet and word processing applications (e.g. Excel and
Word) at an intermediate level.
- Ability to use a computerized and automated Payroll system (e.g. PeopleSoft)
at an intermediate level.
- 4 years of related experience preferred.
