JOB SUMMARY The Director, Grid Technology is responsible for leading the strategic direction, innovation, and operations of Hydro Ottawa’s Grid Technology portfolio. This includes oversight of Smart Grid Technology strategy, Grid Operations Technology systems (SCADA, OMS, GIS, ADMS, P-Tech, Telecom), and the planning and execution of grid modernization projects. The Director, Grid Technology ensures seamless integration between grid technologies and IT systems, enables operational resilience, and drives innovation aligned with corporate priorities, regulatory requirements, and the evolving energy landscape. The Director, Grid Technology leads a multi-disciplinary team of managers, engineers, technologists, and specialists, and collaborates closely with internal business units and external partners to deliver reliable, secure, and future-ready grid technology services. MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES Develop and lead Hydro Ottawa’s Grid Technology strategy, including Smart Grid innovation, grid automation, and the integration of emerging technologies ( AI, EV, DERs, AR/VR). Align the Grid Technology strategy with corporate objectives, regulatory frameworks, and the broader energy transition roadmap. Oversee the operation, maintenance, and lifecycle planning of mission-critical Grid Technology systems such as SCADA, OMS, GIS, P-Tech, ADMS, PI, and Telecommunications. Champion continuous improvement and innovation in grid operations, system integration, and technology enablement. Direct the planning and execution of complex grid modernization projects, including business case development, risk management, vendor selection, budgeting, and implementation oversight. Lead project governance and performance management to deliver measurable outcomes and value from grid technology initiatives. Partner with IT and Cybersecurity teams to safeguard the security, compliance, and resilience of grid technology systems. Oversee the development and execution of disaster recovery plans and business continuity strategies for operational technologies. Support System Control and field operations during grid emergencies and restoration efforts by deploying appropriate technologies and procedures. Participate in emergency response planning and serve as a leader during major incidents. Build and develop a high-performing team of managers, engineers, and technical specialists through strong leadership, mentorship, and succession planning. Maintain oversight of workforce planning, training, and compliance with health, safety, and regulatory standards. Manage strategic vendor relationships and contract performance to deliver value and support long-term technology goals. Foster collaboration across Distribution Operations, Engineering, Asset Management, and IT to enable integrated planning and delivery. Represent Hydro Ottawa in external forums, industry working groups, and regulatory engagements on grid modernization and innovation. Monitor and evaluate emerging trends, technologies, and regulatory shifts to inform decision-making and strategic positioning. Develop, manage, and report on capital and operating budgets for the Grid Technology portfolio. Lead effective resource planning and investment stewardship to maximize operational efficiency and strategic impact. Perform other related duties as required. EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering Minimum 10’ years of progressive experience in electrical utility operations, grid technology, or operational technology roles, including at least 5 years in a senior leadership capacity. Demonstrated expertise in managing and integrating complex systems such as SCADA, OMS, GIS, ADMS, and related telecom infrastructure. Proven leadership in large-scale grid modernization, operational technology transformation, or Smart Grid programs. Strong knowledge of cybersecurity, telecommunications, and IT/OT integration within a utility or critical infrastructure environment. Master’s degree or advanced training in Technology Management or related disciplines considered an asset. Professional Engineer (P.Eng.) licensed or able to be licensed in the Province of Ontario considered an asset. Demonstrated outstanding leadership, communication, and stakeholder engagement capabilities. Strong computer skills; proficient in the use of office productivity and collaboration tools, preferably Google Workspace. English essential, both oral and written; Bilingual (English/French) considered an asset. This is a management group opportunity and salary will be commensurate with qualifications.
