Hours 35 hours per week Department Transit Location This position is eligible for a hybrid work model. When attending an event or meeting in person, your primary office location will be based out of Transit Headquarters (3332 Harvester Rd). Work location is subject to change at the discretion of the City due to operational demands. Effective January 2026 this role will be required to be on site 50% of the time each month. Position Overview Reporting to the Commissioner, Community Services, this position provides managerial leadership and direction for Burlington Transit. Specifically, this role oversees the functions of Transit Operations, Maintenance, and Administration sections. The Transit department employs approximately 225 full time employees. Responsibilities As head of the Department’s senior management team, the Director of Transit is responsible for: Overseeing operational excellence by creating a business plan and establishing goals and objectives to ensure implementation of appropriate policies and practices that meet objectives. Developing and administering annual operational and capital budget, and preparing various reports. Fostering a performance culture through the establishment of deliverables for Transit management. Maintaining a culture of positive labour relations in collaboration with human resources. More specifically, plays a key role in CUPE 2723 collective bargaining, attends grievance meetings, mediation, and arbitration. Making recommendations on projects submitted to government funding opportunities and ensures accurate and timely reporting on funded projects as required. Attending Council and Committee Meetings to represent the department, provide advice and recommendations to influence decision-making. Establishing effective relationships with external agencies and senior levels of government including CUTA (Canadian Urban Transit Association), OPTA (Ontario Public Transit Association), PRESTO, Infrastructure Canada and the Ministry of Transportation. Duties and responsibilities are inclusive but not limited to the above. Requirements Completion of a University degree in Business, Administration, Transportation Planning, Engineering, or related field. A minimum of 7 years experience in progressively senior leadership roles, preferably in transit or traffic operations. Experience managing operating and capital budgets, developing and monitoring key performance indicators, and managing fleet and facility assets of a significant value. Experience effectively managing multi-stakeholder relations including unions, senior management, council and the community. Demonstrated ability to build an effective network of resources within the transit/transportation industry. Superior communication, influencing and negotiation skills. Exceptional analytical, critical thinking and problem-solving skills. Proven leadership skills in alignment with the City’s values of Accountability, Adaptability, Integrity and Helpfulness.
