Summary
The Maintenance Assistant supports the Building Manager in maintaining FSU facilities, ensuring a clean, safe, and well-functioning environment. Responsibilities include performing routine and preventative maintenance, overseeing custodial supply management, conducting minor repairs, and assisting in custodial staff recruitment and scheduling. This role requires strong attention to detail, safety awareness, and the ability to work both independently and as part of a team to ensure all maintenance tasks are completed efficiently and effectively.
Responsibilities
Comply with FSU Health and Safety policies/procedures and WHMIS requirements
Assist the Building Manager with full-cycle recruitment, onboarding, and scheduling of custodial staff
Communicate regularly with the Building Manager regarding required maintenance and repairs
Provide orientation and training to new student custodial staff.
Conduct regular inspections to identify maintenance or repair needs.
Perform preventative maintenance and cleaning of custodial equipment.
Order custodial supplies as required, following the approved vendor ordering process.
Operate hand and power tools, as well as material handling equipment.
Assist with event setups, including room arrangements, audio/visual setup, and post-event cleaning.
Maintain the physical building, including changing light bulbs, repairing drywall, painting, and fixing furniture.
Address vandalism cleanup and repairs within skill level.
Perform routine and deep cleaning, including sweeping, mopping, vacuuming, and window washing.
Ensure proper cleaning and disinfecting procedures in all areas.
Maintain custodial inventory and keep storage areas organized.
Maintain knowledge of environmental safeguards and alarm system.
Pick up and deliver supplies across the college campus.
Collect and dispose of garbage and recyclables.
Complete logbooks and checklists as necessary.
Use Microsoft Office for record-keeping and documentation and Monday.com for project management
Perform other duties as assigned
Qualifications
Post-secondary education preferred
Minimum 5 years of work experience in a maintenance and custodial/janitorial role
Minimum 1 year of experience in building operations and maintenance
Experience with industrial equipment
Familiarity with using power tools, ladders, and floor care equipment
Ability to perform minor repairs (e.g. replace various sized light bulbs)
General maintenance and carpentry skills (e.g. drywall repair, painting, furniture repair)
Knowledge of cleaning products and proper usage
Demonstrated leadership skills and ability to mentor student staff
Strong customer service skills
Ability to work independently and as part of a team
Effective communication skills (both verbal and written)
Strong time management and multi-tasking abilities
High level of independent judgement and reasoning
Strong attention to detail
First Aid certification is an asset
Proficient with Microsoft Office
Experience with Project Management software an asset
