The Alma Mater Society (AMS) is the University of British Columbia’s (UBC) student society, and works to improve the academic, social and personal lives of the 56,000 UBC students at its Vancouver campus. The AMS also runs nine food and beverage outlets, a catering and conference operation, and the AMS Student Nest, providing on-campus employment opportunities and generating revenue that goes directly back into supporting the students at UBC.

Employee status: Permanent Full-Time or Part-Time, or Temporary Part-time until December 31, 2025
Compensation: $18.00 - $18.50 per hour, plus opportunity to earn gratuities
Position Purpose
The Catering & Conferences Associate is responsible for the successful execution of the AMS Catering & Conferences operation. This role is tasked with the exceptional service delivery of all food and beverage services within a Banquet/Catering/Conference environment. Types of events will include offsite catering and deliveries as well as conference services conducted in and around the AMS Student Nest. This role is responsible for customer satisfaction through quality service and timely delivery. The ideal candidate is organized and has excellent time management skills. This individual is a team player, good communication skills yet can work independently.
Duties and Responsibilities
Providing excellent guest service according to AMS standards and procedures
Serving food and beverages to guests according to AMS standards in the Nest or at an offsite location
Setting up and breaking down of rooms according to client specifications which include moving tables, chairs, setting A/V equipment, buffets etc.
Reviewing and verifying catering contracts to actual prepared items and item quality
Preparing, loading, unloading and storing Food & Beverage items, equipment and supplies in the AMS catering van
Liaising with customers to ensure professional and courteous service
Ensuring safe liquor service according to legal requirements and AMS standards and procedures
Ensuring Food Safety protocol is adhered to at all times
Reporting feedback to Catering & Conferences management following the event
Ensuring cleanliness of relevant areas
Be able to work in a cohesive team environment
Reporting work orders to Catering & Conferences managers
Working with the AMS mission statement and values to operate a successful department
Other duties as required
Qualifications and Experience
1 year previous food and beverage serving experience in a restaurant, banquet hall, hotel or equivalent is preferred
Can lift up to 22kg (50lbs)
Ability to work flexible hours (daytime, evenings, weekends and holidays) and on call
Demonstrated superior skills in customer service and organization
Detail oriented
Ability to perform tasks in a timely manner in a fast paced environment
Ability to follow instructions
Serving- It- Right certification an asset
Food Safe level 1 certification or higher an asset
Valid BC driver’s license with a clean driver’s abstract an asset
Language: Required to speak, read and write English, with fluency in other languages being an asset
