About the Role:
The Cloud Database Administrator is a key contributor to the management and optimization of our database systems, ensuring peak performance, data integrity, and availability across ATCO’s multi-cloud and select on-premises environments. Serving as a subject matter expert, this role supports both operations and project teams, collaborating closely with the 24x7 infrastructure and application support teams.
In this capacity, the Cloud Database Administrator proactively monitors database health, oversees maintenance and backups, and responds to operational events. They drive continuous improvement by implementing recommendations and new solutions that enhance system reliability and efficiency.
Leveraging deep expertise in Oracle and SQL Server cloud database systems, the Cloud Database Administrator focuses on delivering high availability, resiliency, and performance. Their responsibilities span operations, design, and solutioning, ensuring robust and scalable database environments that meet business needs.

Maintain expertise in relevant database technologies and implement high-quality solutions for business and application teams
Work independently on projects, delivering results on time
Ensure standards and best practices are documented and incorporated into repeatable processes and automation
Proactively monitor databases to prevent issues and respond quickly to cloud-related requests and incidents
Collaborate with team members on technical decisions and escalate operational or project risks as needed
Manage all databases and cloud platforms, assist in root cause analysis, and recommend preventive actions for future incidents
Documentation
Review and ensure existing ATCO database technical documentation is complete and up to date, and provide recommendations to Database Manager
Review vendor-provided system documentation, including database solution architecture and system manuals, to ensure alignment to business & technical requirements and review with Database Manager as necessary
Planning and Requirements
Support ATCO initiatives as new or enhanced database solutions/projects are being considered
Translate business requirements into ATCO database technical requirements and/or solutions
Contribute to the formulation and definition of system scope and objectives, based on operational or project requirements as they relate to ATCO database infrastructure
Work closely with application and business teams for successful planning of database requirements
Participate in ATCO database solution design with the Database Technical Lead to ensure completeness of technical scope and implementation
Research and Technical Evaluation
Keep abreast of new and emerging database and cloud technologies and/or service offerings
Maintain knowledge of database technology products in ATCO environment
Sustain a strong understanding of the overall ATCO database architecture and of the technology products in the ATCO cloud environment to understand the issues and implications of proposed cloud system and hardware solutions
Security
Maintain an understanding of ATCO Security practices and ensure that the database area is always compliant
Review databases and cloud security alerts/dashboards to quickly fix any security risks
Recommend continuous improvement opportunities in all the relevant areas of security
What You Bring:
Post-secondary education in a related field, with a preference in IT
3+ years of Database Administrator experience, including installation, configuration, and administration
Oracle Database and SQL Server experience
Ability to provide rotational on-call support approximately once every five weeks
Excellent problem-solving and troubleshooting skills
Ability to work effectively in a team and communicate technical concepts to non-technical stakeholders
Experience in implementing high availability and resiliency for database systems
Prior use of any of the following are considered assets:
Linux & Windows Operating Systems
SQL and PL/SQL programming
Git/Bitbucket
Database Security, Encryption and Audit
Goldengate
Oracle Enterprise Manager or similar
Experience with Oracle Cloud Infrastructure (database, access and security) or another cloud provider
Oracle certification (e.g., Oracle Certified Professional)
Experience/Certification in Azure Cloud
A general understanding of MySQL and Postgres
