Job Description: Position Purpose summary: The Custodian is responsible for performing janitorial duties which ensures The Salvation Army Mississauga Community Church and Community and Family Services is maintained in a healthy, safe, and sanitary manner in compliance with applicable standards. Accountabilities: Service Responsibilities Responsible for any combination of light cleaning duties to maintain defined work areas in the ministry unit. Ensure the weekly upkeep of the facility i.e., empty all garbage receptacles, put garbage out for designated garbage day and return recycling and composite bins when emptied. Vacuum all carpeted areas, sweep all tiled areas, wash floors and baseboards in tiled areas, clean all glass areas; windows (inside & outside) and ledges etc. using a ladder where/when needed, dust all offices and furnishings. Always ensure kitchen cleanliness, clean and polish sinks, wipe down cabinets, Clean washrooms including toilets/urinals and counter tops, floors, mirrors, and fixtures. Restock washroom paper supplies, soap and hand sanitizers. Distribute received material as required. Wipe down all tables, chairs, and door handles. Checks, cleans, moves, arranges, and dusts furniture as required. Identify/report to supervisor any repairs that may require an external service provider. Check doors and windows to ensure building security. Monitor and maintain stock of regularly used items, i.e., mops, brooms, lights, supplies etc., and order/purchases as required. Perform minor repairs such as electrical (change light bulbs) and plumbing (unblocking toilets, troubleshooting flushing issues), reports safety concerns and major repair issues to supervisor Spot wash accessible walls. Perform paint touch ups as required Clean and maintains floors, including strip and wax and buff floors, spot cleaning, and shampoo carpets as required. Ensure the general upkeep of external property, keeping sidewalks and entrances clear of snow and ice, including salting, litter pick up and up-keep of storage shed. Ensure storage areas and supply rooms are kept neat and tidy. Health and Safety Contribute to the safety of staff, guests, customers, and clients (e.g., clear fire exits, cleans spillage; no obstacles inside/outside the building) Work in compliance with OH&S Act and Regulations and abide by The Salvation Army’s health and safety policies and procedures. Monitor and maintain mixed cleaner bottles for custodial use. Ensure that all bottles contain WHMIS compliant labeling. Responsible to ensure that there are up-to-date Safety Data Sheets (SDS) on file in the backslash binder for each hazardous product in the workplace. Perform other related duties as requested. WORKING CONDITIONS: This is a permanent full-time position based on 35 hours per week. The incumbent is required to lift/move up to 30 pounds. The incumbent’s work environment is typically in the entire facility and designated properties. The performance of the job requires operating industrial cleaning equipment and tools, mopping/sweeping, bending/twisting/lifting, occasional ladder work and fine motor skills. The performance of the job requires moderate to high attention when handling hazardous chemicals and using non-motorized/general cleaning equipment. education and experience Qualifications: Education, Qualifications and Certifications: Completion of High School. Experience and Skilled Knowledge Requirements Minimum of one (1) year of prior related experience including life skills, custodial, and general familiarity with cleaning and maintenance procedures and equipment. Knowledge of Health & Safety Standards. Skills and Capabilities: Treat the property of The Salvation Army with due care and caution. Ability to work independently and participate as an active and responsible team member in a cooperative team environment. Represent the organization in a positive, professional, and engaging manner. Must comply with all Salvation Army policies, procedures, and associated legislation. Exhibit good listening and interpersonal skills, have strong oral/written communication skills. Self-motivated/disciplined. Ability and willingness to undergo applicable screening and background checks successfully that are satisfactory to The Salvation Army, in its sole discretion (i.e., The Salvation Army Abuse Registry) and provide an original copy of a Background Check screening. Ability and willingness to develop an understanding and support for the mission and purpose of The Salvation Army in Canada and its implications as related to position responsibilities. Compensation: The target hiring range for this position is $17.60 to $20.01 with a maximum of $24.01. Placement in the salary range will be based on factors such as market conditions, internal equity, and candidate experience, skills, and qualifications relevant to the role.
