Job Description: Position Purpose summary: The Cook performs general cooking duties in preparing food items as outlined in menus in accordance with applicable food service and safety regulations. Includes some general cleaning duties. Accountabilities: Food Services Create menu for monthly community meals. Prepare and serve attractive, nutritious meals, according to the prepared menu plans and in accordance with applicable food service and Canada’s Food Guide and safety regulations. Make use of and decide on the best use of resources to minimize waste. Arrange for any special dietary needs and prepare an ongoing list of food supplies needed according to menus. Estimate food requirements for purchasing, monitor, and order food supplies; maintain inventory and records of food, supplies, and equipment. Receive, check, and store food supplies when they are delivered. Maintain the cleanliness of the kitchen and food storage areas (pantry, freezers, and fridges) Report to the supervisor if necessary, regarding equipment that is required/or broken which needs to be repaired or replaced. Maintain relationship with local businesses, vendors, and donors. Supervision Guide and support volunteers in processing and preparing food for the community meal according to health and safety regulations. Provide direction and supervision to volunteers working in the kitchen area. Oversee and support scheduled volunteers, direct and demonstrate work methods, and ensure they work together to achieve the purpose of the organization and enhance the ministries of The Salvation Army. Health and Safety: Ensure food handler requirements are always adhered to by anyone working in or entering the kitchen. Ensure that Department of Health and Fire regulations are adhered to in the kitchen and food storage areas. Ensure that temperatures are recorded for the sterile refrigerator and freezer, they are up to date for inspection. Maintain sanitation, health, and safety standards in work areas, cleanliness of all equipment, food preparation areas, cooking surfaces, dishes, utensils, drawers, and cupboards. Follow guidelines for the safety and security of food and equipment and monitor practices to ensure adherence; complete light cleaning duties to maintain defined work areas. Work in compliance with OH&S Act and Regulations and abide by The Salvation Army’s health and safety policies and procedures. Perform other related duties as required. CRITICAL RELATIONSHIP MANAGEMENT: Internal: Corps Officers, employees, and volunteers External: Community, Donors, Health Inspector, Vendors MANAGERIAL/TECHNICAL LEADERSHIP RESPONSIBILITY Reports directly to the Corps Officer Direct reports: None Responsible for providing supervision, training, direction and assigning responsibilities to up to 5 volunteers but generally works alongside those supervised. Report to supervisor volunteer behaviors that are not in keeping with program expectations. FINANCIAL AND MATERIALS MANAGEMENT: Assist with food management, complete food inventories, donations/product flow and distribution of same. Required to work within assigned budget. WORKING CONDITIONS Is this position a temporary part-time position based on 15 hours per week. Use of kitchen tools and appliances (i.e., knives, stove/oven, dishwasher etc. This position requires the incumbent to wear appropriate footwear and clothing, i.e. closed-toed slip resistant footwear etc. Ability to lift/move objects on a regular basis up to 50 pounds without assistance. This job requires involves working in a standing position for long periods of time and lifting heavy kitchen items, walking, carrying, sitting, reaching, bending, twisting, climbing, stooping, kneeling, and crouching frequently. Some travel is required using Ministry Unit program vehicle to pick up supplies on occasion. Normal hours of work: 11:30 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. on Saturday’s and includes a ½ hour unpaid meal break and 9:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. on Thursday’s and Friday’s, with some flexibility in scheduling may be required dependent on operational requirements. The above responsibilities must be performed in keeping with The Salvation Army’s Mission, Vision and Values, in a professional manner, upholding our code of conduct. education, experience, Qualifications, certifications, skills: Current Safe Food Handler’s Certification is required. High School Diploma plus culinary education and training of one academic year. Experience and Skilled Knowledge Requirements: Up to one (1) year of experience in a kitchen/food preparation and service environment. Knowledge and application of food safety standards and sanitation regulations. Proficiency in basic cooking techniques and knowledge of food preparation methods. Understanding various dietary needs and restrictions, i.e. gluten-free, vegetarian, allergen-free etc., and ability to prepare meals accordingly. Experience supervising volunteers. Valid Ontario Class “G” Driver’s License, a current copy of a driver’s abstract for review and verification that is satisfactory to The Salvation Army, in its sole discretion, is required. Alternative combinations of education and experience may be considered. Skills and Capabilities: Strong verbal communication skills. Acute attention to detail is essential for food preparation, cleaning and safety protocols. Ability to manage time to ensure meal preparation, cleaning and other duties are completed in a timely manner. Represent The Salvation Army in a professional, positive, and engaging manner. Self-motivated and disciplined. Strong written and verbal communication skills. Participate as an active and responsible team member. Ability and willingness to develop an understanding and support for the mission and purpose of The Salvation Army in Canada and its implications as related to position responsibilities. Compensation: The target hiring range for this position is $20.25 to $25.31 with a maximum of $30.37. Placement in the salary range will be based on factors such as market conditions, internal equity, and candidate experience, skills, and qualifications relevant to the role.
