The Opportunity: Reporting to the Director of Administration and Operations for the Faculty of Science, the Associate Director (AD) Communications is responsible for overseeing all aspects of the Faculty’s communication efforts to promote the Faculty and support its strategic objectives. The AD will lead the direction and vision of the Faculty’s communications portfolio, create the necessary supportive plans, and oversee its implementation. The AD will identify appropriate target audiences, messaging, communications channels, and tactics, including publications, new media, and social media, to increase visibility within McGill, locally, nationally and, over time, internationally. The AD will manage relationships with central Communications and External Relations units including the McGill Media Relations Office, departments and affiliated units of the Faculty, Faculty Advisory Board, student groups, and other University colleagues, as well as with external communications providers. Key Responsibilities: Establish and implement communications plans, directives, and objectives in alignment with and in support of Faculty strategic objectives. Identify new opportunities within the communications portfolio to support Faculty priorities. Plan, conceptualize and articulate the Faculty story and messages in a manner that is consistent with the Faculty’s vision, mission and objectives, and that resonates with both academic and student audiences. Lead the Science communications team to create, develop, edit and oversee content for a variety of media, including written, photographic, graphic design and video for both external and internal audiences, ensuring it is aligned with Faculty and University objectives. Provide senior professional expertise to the Dean, Faculty senior management and departments on appropriate communications plans and tactics. Establish and develop standards, processes, brand assets and a style guide for the communications unit. Serve as a primary point of contact for the central communications team and act as a conduit for Faculty-related strategic objectives, news and information. Provide guidance on key messages for speaking opportunities, events and announcements that have a major impact on the Faculty and University’s reputation. Participate in the development of guidelines and criteria for communication plans for the McGill community, including crisis management and unwanted press. Redesign and manage the content of the main Faculty of Science website ensuring information is accurate, complete and allows users to find information easily. Monitor the Faculty and McGill’s communications landscape, identify upcoming issues and opportunities, and advise on their likely impacts. Advise on communications challenges, opportunities and impact of operational decisions and options for addressing them. Lead a team of professional and administrative staff and oversee the communications unit’s operations. Your Qualifications: Education: University degree in a communications or journalism field preferred. Experience: Minimum of five years of experience in a communications role, with demonstrated experience in digital communications, including social media strategy and content creation. Experience in a research, educational or healthcare setting is an asset. Your Key Strengths: Bilingual; excellent verbal and written communication skills, in both English and French. Superior written and oral communication skills, with the ability to make science palpable to a wide-ranging audience. Exceptional interpersonal skills, both for internal and external relations, including tact, diplomacy, discretion and good judgment. Genuine interest in science communications and student engagement, making complex scientific ideas accessible and relevant to diverse audiences. Ability to think strategically and communicate effectively with diverse audiences. Proven experience creating effective communications strategies and implementation plans. Demonstrated ease in working with senior leaders. Understanding of what subjects are of interest to local and new media. Detail-oriented and organized, and able to set priorities, multitask, work both independently and as a team, under pressure and meet deadlines. Strong leadership, experience in managing staff. Demonstrated ability to concurrently accomplish organizational goals, while navigating within a larger organization among multiple stakeholders and audiences. Experience overseeing and proofing creative concepts and artwork for print and online publication would be an asset. Proficient using MS Office Suite (Word, PowerPoint, Outlook and Excel), as well as, web, content management and social media tools and platforms (e.g., Drupal, WordPress, Instagram, X, LinkedIn, Youtube, etc.). Familiarity with HTML, Canva, Adobe Creative Suite, an asset.
