The Fitness and Performance program at the Faculty of Kinesiology and Physical Education (FKPE) at the University of Toronto offers a comprehensive, integrated approach to physical activity and high-performance training. By blending research, practice, and experiential learning, the program supports a wide range of participants through every stage of their fitness journey. It emphasizes physical and mental wellness, academic success, and long-term healthy living, while also creating revenue-generating opportunities to reduce reliance on student ancillary fees.
Reporting to the Manager of Fitness and Performance, the Lead Coach plays a key role in developing and implementing strategically aligned sport and recreational fitness programs. They are responsible for coaching, staff training, performance evaluation, and program delivery across various initiatives, including recreational group fitness classes, general strength and conditioning training, and community programming. The role demands effective leadership, budget management, and a commitment to high service standards, ensuring a student-centered and customer-focused experience that encourages sustainable participation and overall wellness.
Your responsibilities will include:

- Assists in managing all duties consistent with the operation of a successful fitness and performance program.
- Develops and implements staff development and training programs that focus on coaching staff instructors to deliver the Fitness and Performance programs that are strategically aligned with intercollegiate sport and recreational fitness program objectives.
- Collaborates with the Unit’s team members in designing and implementing a comprehensive sport fitness and performance plan and evaluation framework, focusing on promoting and delivering meaningful and sustainable participation opportunities in the F&P programs for all student and community members.
- Maintains positive relationships with F&P governing bodies at the local, regional, provincial, national and professional levels.
- Identify needs and operate as the lead departmental contact for the development of marketing plans that meet the unit’s business development objectives. Ensuring that marketing outputs meet marketing of fitness industry standards.
- Builds strategic relationships with fitness and performance groups in the community to foster relationships, build networks, increase visibility, increase awareness, act as a resource, enhance community engagement, build loyalty and position the U of T as a leader in sport focused fitness and performance.
- Full managerial authority over the staff in the work unit/department; including defining duties and responsibilities, work assignments, staff scheduling, task completion, and performance evaluations.
- Abide by all union-related processes such as work schedule accommodation, staff conflicts, grievances and arbitration, as well as maintain positive relations with union representatives.
- Assists in the management and maintenance process of fitness equipment including long term forecasting and capital purchases.
Qualifications
Essential Qualifications:
- University degree preferably in Kinesiology/Physical Education or equivalent.
- Strength and Conditioning and/or Fitness Instruction based certification required (eg ACSM; NSCA; CSEP; NASM; CFES; CanFitPro).
- Minimum five years fitness and performance coaching and instructing experience in a diverse and multi-disciplinary fitness environment
- Three years’ experience managing a large fitness and performance team preferably in a unionized environment as well as coaching, instructing and motivating participants.
- Three years’ experience instructing fitness and performance programs related to sport fitness and performance plans, including providing pedagogical methods to incorporate clear learning outcomes within programming.
- Three years’ experience designing and implementing staff development and training programs relating to sport fitness and performance including establishing and providing clear learning outcomes.
- Experience integrating and embedding sport and exercise science, wellness, research and program development, planning and delivery across a broad Performance and Fitness portfolio.
- Two years’ experience with budget administration.
- Demonstrated excellent interpersonal, organizational, oral and written communication skills that support consensus building and shared decision-making.
- Proven problem solving, analysis and negotiation skills.
- Proven skills in training and mentoring large staff contingents.
- Excellent understanding of various database software, above average working knowledge of PowerPoint, Excel and Word.
- Exemplary leadership as an ambassador and advocate for physical activity and recreation.
- Leadership abilities in the creation of a welcoming and engaging environment that is supported through exemplary customer experience building.
- Ability to manage conflicting priorities and deadlines.
- Ability to act on issues/problems/initiatives involving equity and diversity with tact, discretion and compassion.
- Ability to maintain professional decorum and display sound judgement under pressure.
- Ability to deal with a variety of tasks and meet strict deadlines.
- Ability to frequently adjust priorities and have great attention to detail.
- Ability to work with a high degree of independence and initiative.
- Must have a demonstrated ability to analyze all aspects of fitness and performance.
- Must be able to maintain confidentiality when managing sensitive information.
- Team work and team building are essential to this role and the ability to collaborate within a collegial environment is paramount.
- Experience working with and maintaining fitness equipment is an asset.
