Job Description: Position Purpose summary: The Family Services Worker assists individuals and families who are seeking aid and assistance from, or have been referred to, The Salvation Army. This position also provides support to other programs provided by the Community and Family Services. Accountabilities: Client Services and Programs Conduct initial intake assessment to determine immediate needs and supports needed by the client. Provide emergency assistance services, i.e. food, clothing, household needs in accordance with policy. Identify issues and trends and present recommendations for changes that will advocate and benefit the clients. Assist with food bank operations, ordering and/or receipt of food donations, recording, general cleanliness, organization. Assist in food sorting/food preparation for distribution to clients, watching for expiry dates on items. Arrange for discarding of food bank items that are not usable in accordance with Salvation Army policy and Health Canada guidelines. Assist with the coordination/organization of annual fundraising efforts and/or special or seasonal programs as required, i.e. Food Drives, Toy Distribution, Christmas Kettle Campaign and various other programs etc. Assist with the coordination and pickup of food donations and/or non-monetary donations. Assist with camping programs –Adventure Camps, Bible Weeks. Assist with social media as requested. Network and refer to The Salvation Army, government, and community social service providers to coordinate resources for the benefit of clients and program when necessary. May support, assist, supervise, train, schedule volunteers and demonstrate work methods in consultation with the supervisor; ensure they work together to achieve the purpose of the organization and enhance the ministries of The Salvation Army. Finance and Administration Ensure that Ministry Unit policies and procedures are followed for the safe/secure handling of all monetary donations received and appropriate documentation of gift cards and various vouchers is maintained, i.e. clothing vouchers. Receive donations and process temporary receipts as applicable and prepare and mail thank you letters. Maintain written records, logs of activities, including activity reports and statistical information. Maintain accurate records of client information on Link 2 Feed Program while maintaining confidentiality and providing operational and statistical reports as needed. Greet visitors and answer phones as required, returning missed calls in a timely fashion. Assist with the completion of all documentation required for Accreditation, Social Service Reviews, Program Inspections, etc. as they relate to Owen Sound Family Services, and ensure compliance as directed. Vehicle/Maintenance Perform circle checks of the vehicle and maintain vehicle logs; fuel the vehicle as necessary and ensure that the vehicle is always kept clean and presentable. Report any vehicle mechanical failures or concerns to the CFS Manager in a timely manner. Complete and maintain an accurate driver’s log. Maintain knowledge of legislative and company policies such as Health and Safety Regulations, provincial and Municipal Highway traffic acts. Health and Safety Responsible to work in compliance with the Ontario Health & Safety Act and Regulations. Responsible to report any serious health and safety infractions or problems in accordance with policies to the CS Manager. Ensure the Community Services Department is cleaned regularly according to acceptable health standards and that physical property is maintained, arranging for repairs as necessary. Report any safety hazards, maintenance problems, equipment or supply needs to the CFS Manager. Perform other position related duties as required. CRITICAL RELATIONSHIP MANAGEMENT Internal: Supervisor, Corps Officer, staff, volunteers External: Community, clients, & community Social Service agencies MANAGERIAL/Technical Leadership RESPONSIBILITY: This position reports directly to the Community Family Services Manager. This position has no direct reports FINANCIAL AND MATERIALS MANAGEMENT: Handle grocery store cards. Oversee food bank materials management such as donations/product flow and distribution of same. WORKING CONDITIONS: This is a casual position with no guaranteed hours of work. Schedule may vary according to requirements of responsibilities – with evening and weekend work. The Supervisor will set the hours of work and work schedule. The working conditions are such that in order to meet the operational needs of the job some flexibility is required as it relates to hours of work. Working environment is typically in the office/food bank distribution area in generally agreeable conditions. Potentially may have to deal with verbally/physically abusive clients or high-risk individuals. Be able to lift/move up to 50 pounds. This job requires reaching, bending and stooping frequently; working in a standing position for periods of time. Travel is associated with this position, mainly in the Grey Bruce area. Note: Required to use a program vehicle where applicable. Normal hours of work: Scheduled as per hours of operation Monday to Friday, between the hours of 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. This includes a ½ hour unpaid meal break each day. The hours of work and hours of operation are subject to review as required. Please note there may be a seasonal temporary change in work days and hours for a short period of time during the months of November and December and includes a ½ hour unpaid meal break as required. Extra days and hours will include evening and weekend work. Normal locations of work: 365 14th Street West, Owen Sound, ON / 614 Barnes Ave, Port Elgin, ON The above responsibilities must be discharged in accordance with The Salvation Army’s Mission Statement, in a professional manner, exemplifying Christian standards of conduct. education and experience Qualifications: Education, Qualifications and Certifications: Enrolled in or Completion of a Community College Diploma, Social Service Worker, counselling or equivalent in a related field of study. Alternative combinations of education and experience may be considered. Experience and Skilled Knowledge Requirements Minimum of two (2) years of prior related experience working with and knowledge of barrioers confronted by people who are disenfranchised including, but not limited to people living in poverty, with mental health concerns, addictions and/or experiencing homelessness. Knowledge of a variety of social service programs. Proficiency in all Microsoft Office products is required - i.e. Word, Excel, Publisher, PowerPoint, etc. Valid Ontario Class “G” Driver’s License, own vehicle and insurance, provide an original copy of current driver’s abstract that it satisfactory to The Salvation Army, in its sole discretion, is required. Represent the organization in a positive, professional and engaging manner. Must comply with all Salvation Army policies, procedures and associated legislation. Compensation: The target hiring range for this position is $18.99 to $23.73 with a maximum of $28.48.
