Overview
Vertex is seeking an experienced Corporate Safety Manager to join our team in Sherwood Park. The ideal candidate will be a proven leader who lives and promotes Vertex’s safety culture.
This role will lead the strategic development and execution of Vertex’s corporate safety programs across multiple business lines, including environmental consulting services, engineering, industrial cleaning, oilfield operations, and fluid transportation (water, vac, semi-vac, combo-vac, and high-pressure units). The successful candidate will bring a balance of technical expertise, regulatory knowledge, and leadership acumen, ensuring compliance and promoting a culture of safety excellence across all levels of the organization.
Qualifications
Minimum 10+ years’ experience as a Corporate Safety Manager within a large, complex organization
Related Bachelor’s degree or recognized Occupational Health & Safety designation
CRSP designation (Canadian Registered Safety Professional) required; CHSC or equivalent is an asset
Demonstrated experience managing WCB claims, modified duties, and return-to-work programs
Strong background in transportation safety, including commercial vehicle compliance, driver safety programs, and operations involving vac, semi-vac, combo-vac, and high-pressure units
Proven ability to develop and manage corporate safety systems across environmental, industrial cleaning, and oilfield service sectors
In-depth knowledge of federal, provincial, and local OHS and transportation regulations; U.S. experience considered an asset
Experience implementing or transitioning safety management software systems (Itrak is an asset)
Excellent communication, leadership, and relationship-building skills with the ability to influence at all levels of the organization
Strong analytical and problem-solving skills with a commitment to proactive risk mitigation
Responsibilities
Lead and continuously advance Vertex’s safety culture, embedding health, safety, and environmental excellence into all operations
Develop, implement, and maintain corporate health, safety, and environmental programs, policies, and procedures
Champion WCB and claims management, ensuring timely, effective case management and successful return-to-work outcomes
Manage and mentor the Corporate Safety Department and Transportation Compliance Department, providing guidance, professional development, and performance oversight
Lead the continuous improvement of Vertex’s Health and Safety Management System to align with evolving regulatory and industry standards
Collaborate with senior leadership to develop and execute corporate safety objectives, KPIs, and annual improvement plans
Support COR, ISO, or other external audit programs, ensuring certification standards are maintained and improved
Drive data-driven decision-making by analyzing safety metrics, identifying trends, and proactively addressing emerging risks
Partner with Operations, Fleet, and HR departments and other business lines to align safety, training, and compliance programs across all divisions
Oversee driver qualification programs, ensuring proper training, competency, and licensing for all commercial vehicle operators
Provide expert guidance during project planning and bid submissions to ensure client safety requirements are met and accurately represented
Collaborate with Maintenance and Fleet departments to support equipment safety inspections, preventative maintenance, and vehicle compliance tracking
Evaluate and mitigate risk across diverse operational environments, including industrial cleaning and transportation-based work
Conduct and oversee corporate safety audits, inspections, and investigations, ensuring compliance and continuous improvement
Deliver training and presentations on key safety topics such as transportation, confined space, high-pressure operations, and industrial hygiene
Represent Vertex with regulatory agencies, clients, and industry groups on safety-related matters
Champion safety leadership development among supervisors and managers, providing coaching and resources to strengthen field-level safety ownership
Promote employee engagement initiatives that enhance safety awareness and reporting, including near-miss and recognition programs
Lead post-incident reviews and lessons-learned sessions, ensuring findings are communicated and integrated into training and procedures
Oversee emergency response planning and training, including corporate-level drills, evaluations, and procedure updates
Track, analyze, and report on safety performance metrics to senior leadership, identifying trends and improvement opportunities

Location
This position is based out of Sherwood Park, AB, with occasional travel to field locations.
