About Musqueam
We are traditional hən̓q̓əmin̓əm̓ speaking people. Today, we are a strong, growing community of over 1,300 members. We live on a small portion of our traditional territory, known as the Musqueam Indian Reserve, located south of Marine Drive near the mouth of the Fraser River. The name Musqueam relates back to the River Plant, the name of the plant is məθkʷəy̓. There is a story that has been passed on from generation to generation that explains how we became known as the xʷməθkʷəy̓əm (Musqueam) - People of the River Plant. We have always moved throughout our territory using the resources it provides for fishing, hunting, trapping and gathering. We remain distinct and our cultural practices are strong, despite the devastating impacts of residential schools, colonial laws banning our ceremonies, and other attempts to assimilate our people. Our lands and waters continue to support our cultural and economic practices while serving as a source of knowledge and memory, encoded with our teachings and laws. Reporting to the Self-Government Implementation Manager, the Self-Governance Implementation Coordinator (the “SGIC”) works as a member of the Self-Government Implementation team within the Self-Government Transition Department to support the successful ratification and then implementation of Musqueam’s Self-Government Agreement (the "SGA").
This is a multidisciplinary role that requires a diverse skill set and the ability to work effectively with all Musqueam departments, Chief and Council, community members, and external partners, including other governments (BC; Canada and First Nation). The Coordinator will support the development and execution of Musqueam’s Ratification and Implementation Plans, including constitutional work, community engagement and work on Musqueam's membership code and to ensure alignment with Musqueam’s values, vision, and governance priorities in all SGA-related work.
Duties and Responsibilities
Coordinate scheduling and communication with Musqueam Administration, Chief and Council, community members, and external governments or agencies as required.
Assist in the preparation of work plans, budgets, memos, briefing notes, Band Council Resolutions (BCRs), and other documentation to support the Self-Government Implementation team.
Organize and support meetings and events, including logistics, preparing and distributing documents and presentation materials, note-taking, drafting summaries, tracking action items, and general administrative support.
Support the planning and facilitation of community engagement activities.
Maintain effective and respectful working relationships with internal departments, elected leadership, community members, and external stakeholders.
Collaborate across Musqueam departments to ensure coordinated efforts toward shared implementation goals.
Create and maintain organizational tools to track data, issues, tasks, and milestones. Maintain digital and physical filing systems.
Develop a working knowledge of the Musqueam–Canada relationship and the provisions of Musqueam’s Self-Government Agreement.
Assist in identifying technical and financial resources to support community engagement and transition planning.
Perform other related duties as assigned.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
Education and experience equivalent to post-secondary training in office administration, public administration, Indigenous governance, or a related field, combined with experience working in or with First Nations communities or organizations.
Strong interpersonal and teamwork skills, with the ability to work respectfully and effectively with diverse individuals and groups.
Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
Strong organizational, time management, and problem-solving abilities.
Ability to work independently and manage multiple priorities in a dynamic and sometimes fast-paced environment.
Familiarity with consensus-building and collaborative approaches to planning and problem-solving.
Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite and other standard office software, including formatting documents, managing files, and maintaining databases.
Understanding of or interest in Indigenous governance, community engagement, and intergovernmental relations is an asset.
Preferred Qualifications
A post-secondary degree or diploma in a related field (e.g., Indigenous Studies, Public Administration, Political Science, Community Planning), or equivalent relevant work experience.
Experience working with First Nations governments or Indigenous organizations is highly preferred.
Working Conditions
Work is primarily performed in an office environment, with some community-based or off-site meetings and events including some evening and weekend work as required.
A satisfactory Criminal Record Check is required.
