Testing Research Associate
As a Testing Research Associate, you'll play a crucial role in making sure our experimental protocols are on point and that we're using all the right agronomic practices and crop management techniques. You'll also help us gather high throughput data to advance our vegetable pipelines.
This is an exciting opportunity for a talented and passionate individual to join a multidisciplinary team of vegetable breeders, horticultural scientists, data scientists, and engineers who work on creative solutions to complex business problems using advanced field and greenhouse operations, equipment, analytics, and cutting-edge automation techniques.
This is a permanent position based out of the Leamington, Ontario area.
What you will do:
Responsible for planning and executing experimental protocols and performance trials in protected culture and open field environments for tomato, sweet peppers, and cucumbers.
Operates research equipment, taking notes, entering data management with internal IT systems, and complying with seed stewardship standards
Develops, executes and continuously improves a strategic testing plans in alignment with business objectives and to deliver results within the crops
Execute protocols and trials to generate quality data enabling breeding partners to advance new products based on performance of products and market needs
Captures data in Windows and iOS operating systems (desktop computing, iPhones, iPads) and conduct data quality check and assurance to enable timely advancement of vegetable products
Leverage metrics applications and quality control processes to realize accuracy, efficiency and expanded improvements to protocols
Manages relationships with growers and third-party cooperators to ensure timely completion and integrity of data collected
Creates and uses tools from collected and analyzed data to develop the performance story and support the transfer of product and agronomic knowledge
Uses overall understanding of market potential, competition, key trends, research and emerging market forces to become an industry expert and develop strategies and plans that effectively grow market share
Explore new technologies to increase capacity, speed up current processes, and deploy novel technologies in data collection and crop management
Perform tasks to ensure compliance with Bayer policies and quality standard, including safeguarding of equipment daily use logs, calibration and maintenance
Ability to work extended hours during peak seasons (including non-traditional day-time hours with the potential of overnight travel)
For individuals based at a site there will be increased focus in managing and executing the agronomic and crop husbandry practices in growing the crop, as well as, other site management activities.
Who you are:
BSc. in Horticulture, Agronomy or related field with a minimum of 5 years of crop management, either in open field or in in a greenhouse environment. (Candidates with PhD and 1 year experience; or a MSc with 3 years of experience will also be considered)
Knowledge and experience with agricultural equipment and vegetable crops production practices and history of leveraging that knowledge in a research environment
Demonstrated abilities to develop project plans, analyze and interpret field trial data
Ability to perform successfully in a fast-paced, dynamic, team-based environment, managing multiple projects and priorities
Ability to work collaboratively with cross-functional teams to effectively achieve business results
Capacity to communicate and work effectively with all management levels in a multi-cultural organization.
Be able to work extended hours during peak operational seasons
Driver’s license is essential.
Proficiency in written and verbal English.
