Position Summary
We are developing advanced nanotechnology to extend our manufacturing capabilities. This technology has broad applicability to secure documents of all types, to quantum computing, to medical uses, and to environmental remediation. As a Scientist, you will be part of the dynamic surface science R&D team developing this technology. You will work in a one-of-a-kind cutting-edge laboratory, where you will use unique surface science instrumentation to conduct research and develop novel approaches to bottom-up atomically precise manufacturing. The ideal candidate is passionate about learning and excelling in physics, surface science, chemistry, and/or related engineering fields.

Job Description
What You Will Do
Join our experimental team and contribute to cutting-edge surface science research through:
Microscope & Equipment Operation
Operate Scanning Probe Microscopes (SPM), primarily qPlus AFM and STM.
Use additional tools like Field Ion Microscopes, XPS, mass spectrometry, and MBE systems.
Work in ultra-high vacuum (UHV) and cryogenic conditions using vacuum chambers and suitcases, UHV pumps, bakeout equipment, liquid nitrogen and helium, and helium recovery equipment.
Research & Experimentation
Participate in experimental design, scientific literature reviews, troubleshooting, and solution development aligned with company goals.
Data Analysis
Analyze data using specialized SPM software, Python scripts, statistical tools, and graphing platforms to extract meaningful insights from large datasets.
Present findings in a clear, concise format that supports well-defined conclusions tailored to the intended audience.
Reporting & Communication
Write and tailor clear, concise technical reports for both internal documentation and external peer-reviewed publications, adapting content to suit the target audience.
Present and communicate research outcomes at company meetings and scientific conferences, ensuring clarity and relevance for diverse audiences.
Cryogen Handling
Perform cryogen fills when needed (most of our SPMs are cooled down using liquid nitrogen and/or liquid helium) and follow internal SOPs.
Participate in scheduled teamwork and cryogen fills.
Follow safety protocols, while adhering to and championing best laboratory and workplace health and safety practices, following recommendations of our joint health and safety committee, following established standard operating procedures and contributing to improving them when appropriate.

Knowledge and Experience
Master’s or Ph.D. degree in Science or Engineering
Experience in the following areas is a key asset:
Experimental Techniques:
Must have:
Experience with Scanning Tunneling Microscopy or Atomic Force Microscopy (qPlus or frequency modulation non-contact AFM)
Experience with Ultra High Vacuum (UHV) equipment
Nice to have:
Experience with X-ray Photoelectron Spectroscopy
Experience with Molecular Beam Epitaxy, SEM, FIB
Microfabrication processes, chip fabrication processes, clean room work
Molecular deposition in UHV
Atom-scale manipulation
Quantum computing research experience
Software and Programming:
Programming abilities with Python and LabView are a plus
