Your Opportunity
Stantec is looking for a Tunneling Subject Matter Expert (SME) to join our growing Water Team. This is a unique opportunity to provide technical leadership on a variety of tunnelling projects including - tunnelling in soil and bedrock, smaller diameter and scale tunnelling (microtunneling, horizontal auger boring) larger diameter and scale tunnelling (EPB TBM, Rock TBM).
As a Tunneling SME, you will provide leadership in the execution and delivery of technically complex Tunneling and Trenchless projects. This will also include mentoring and training staff within the Trenchless and Tunneling team for succession planning. Collaborate with clients, presenting solutions and resolving technical challenges on active projects. Support proposal development and business growth initiatives through strategic client engagement.
The role will involve managing multiple tasks and deadlines and working with multi-disciplinary teams across multiple offices. The candidate will be working independently on projects and providing support to a team of professionals on larger projects.
As an SME, you will apply your industry expertise to ensure Stantec remains at the forefront of trenchless and tunneling innovation. You’ll also have the opportunity to contribute to the local and North American Stantec tunneling and trenchless community together with other SMEs within the practice.

Your Key Responsibilities
Perform complex engineering design tasks on assigned water conveyance projects through collaboration with a wide range of technical disciplines. Routine technical tasks include:
design basis documents
engineering calculations including heat and material balances
engineering drawings
engineering reports
feasibility studies
presentations to clients, regulatory agencies and/or project stakeholders
SME oversight and quality reviews
Engage in the development of a design through sketches, electronic models, diagrams, and other visual formats.
Assist senior engineers/designers with developing and managing the project scope, budget, staffing, and schedule.
Lead management of others in development and coordination of the project construction specifications.
Conduct and/or coordinate quality assurance and quality control on assigned projects and facilitate independent technical review projects by others.
Review contractor/vendor submittals for adherence to Contract Documents and industry standards.
Assist with the management of the design and construction of projects.
Involved in the permitting process of projects, which may require meeting with clients, contractors, interested stakeholder parties, and reviewing agency personnel.
Assist in the development and updates of project design standards and guidelines; prepare abstracts and technical papers/presentations.
Coordinate with or directly manage a team of design professionals and technicians.
Provide SME oversight of projects of varying complexity within multidisciplinary teams.
Mentor and supervise staff and develop high-performing project teams.
Assist with business development pursuits including identifying customers, proposal preparation and participation in interviews.
Interact with clients and management to develop the technical vision of necessary client solutions.
Coordinate with internal Stantec and client staff regarding status of project scope, schedule, and budget.
Support PM and other technical staff to ensure that projects' needs are met in a timely and effective manner.
