Unit Summary 
The Surgical Centre provides outpatient surgical services. The team is comprised of Registered Nurses, Social Workers, Health Care Aides, Business Clerks, and Physicians. Urology and gynecology procedures are the services provided. Ambulatory Care Clinic provides consultations, minor procedures, wound care and diagnostic tests. 
Position Summary 
The Registered Practical Nurse provides patient care in both the Surgical Centre and the Ambulatory Care Clinic as required. The Registered Practical Nurse works, in the Surgical Center, as a member of the interdisciplinary health care team, using a client centered approach. The role encompasses counseling, health teaching and patient advocacy provided in a non-judgmental manner. The role includes all aspects of care for the urology and gynecology patient. In Ambulatory Care, the role includes wound assessment and care, health teaching and procedure room set up and turn over. As a member of the healthcare team, the Registered Practical Nurse provides patient care within the scope of practice of an RPN. 
Schedule Work Hours 
Monday to Friday; days 
- Current Certificate of Registration from the College of Nurses of Ontario as a Registered Practical Nurse 
 
- Completion of post-diploma nursing courses: Pelvic Assessment of the Adult Woman, Physical Assessment and Wound Care 
 
- Current BCLS 
 
- Current Certification in Medication Administration, Urinary Bladder Catheterization and Intravenous Access 
 
- Minimum 2 years recent relevant experience within the past 2 years working in a day-surgery interventional suite 
 
- Demonstrated experience in accessing veins for intravenous therapy and infusion of intravenous antibiotics 
 
- Demonstrated knowledge of surgical instruments and equipment used in urology, gynecology and other minor surgical procedures 
 
- Demonstrated knowledge of disorders of urinary tract including voiding dysfunctions, cancers, and BPH 
 
- Demonstrated knowledge and experience in dealing with issues of diversity (culture, race, class) 
 
- Demonstrated experience and comfort in dealings with issues of sexuality, contraception, STIs and early pregnancy 
 
- Demonstrated ability to provide support of women accessing termination of pregnancy 
 
- Demonstrated experience with appropriate selection of Wound Care products 
 
- Demonstrated ability to lift using appropriate lifting techniques and bend, push and pull using good body mechanics 
 
- Demonstrated ability to work and communicate effectively within a multidisciplinary team
