Job End Date November 2, 2027 This is 2-year term position at 0.8 FTE Job Summary The Faculty of Medicine is home to more than 1,500 graduate students in 20 graduate programs (14 of which confer doctoral degrees), and approximately 300 postdoctoral fellows located in the Faculty’s Departments, Schools, Centres, Institutes, and affiliated hospital sites. Faculty of Medicine - Graduate Education Counsellor (GE) (0.8 FTE) Provides wellbeing programming and clinical services to support graduate students overall wellbeing and help them succeed in their respective programs. Provides single session/short-term counselling, triage and referral to stepped care including the UBC Counselling Services team, external resources and emergency services as appropriate. Offers consultation to faculty and staff including response to crises. Working with the Graduate Wellbeing Coordinator in the Faculty of Medicine, promotes wellbeing for graduate students in the Faculty of Medicine. Builds a network of resources on campus and in the community specific to the needs of graduate students in the Faculty of Medicine. Contributes to the ongoing development and implementation of programming for graduate students to support their mental wellbeing. Organizational Status Reports to the Associate Director, Embedded Counselling, Student Health and Wellbeing, for oversight of clinical work. Reports to the Associate Dean, Graduate Education for operational matters, and student wellbeing. Works collaboratively with the FoM Graduate Education (GPE) student services team as well as the team of professionals within UBC Student Health and Wellbeing, actively participating in and contributing to the development and delivery of effective mental wellbeing programs and services. Also works in collaboration with other UBC student services and community resources. Note: Flexible work hours, including evenings according to program or area needs, as required. Works in the Faculty of Medicine and provides programming elsewhere on or off-campus (e.g., GPE clinical/research sites are located at UBC Vancouver Campus, at the Vancouver General Hospital complex, at BC Children’s and Women’s complex and near the St. Paul’s complex) as needed to support the wellbeing of graduate students. Work Performed Faculty of Medicine - GPE (0.8 FTE) · Collaborates with the Wellbeing Coordinator, the GPE office, and relevant members across UBC (eg. Faculty of Graduate & Postdoctoral Studies, UBC Health Promotion & Education, similar positions in other UBC Faculties) to develop strategies and deliver workshops, outreach programs, seminars, groups, training, orientations and other programming to promote graduate student wellbeing (in connection with UBC Counselling Services as appropriate). · Identifies existing programs, resources and services relevant to graduate student wellbeing. · Considers and supports culturally appropriate wellbeing programming for all graduate students. · Provides single session and brief counselling by phone, video and in person to support · Provides intake assessments and referral services to internal and external resources for ongoing care. This is consistent with the stepped care model and includes online tools/resources/workshops/life coaching/group programs, Student Health Service, external resources, and crisis support/emergency services. · Develops and implements outreach services to ensure all UBC Faculty of Medicine graduate students in the province have access to the services provided by the GPE Office. This includes building and maintaining a network of UBC and external resources specific to the needs of graduate students. · Provides consultation and support to staff, faculty and graduate student peer leaders on trainee mental health concerns, including crises. · Participates in meetings with the GPE office, as well as Counselling Services case management and administrative meetings. · Maintains accurate and timely documentation of client notes and forms within UBC’s policies and procedures. · Travels to distributed sites (or connects virtually) to offer counselling and group support/workshops, as required. · Prepares reports, publications and other documents as required, and may be asked to sit on and participate as a member of GPE committees and working groups. · Works closely with GPE to develop content for and promote wellbeing programming for Faculty of Medicine graduate students and postdoctoral fellows. Responsible for ensuring graduate student wellbeing web resources are up to date and accurate. Consequence of Error/Judgement Must be able to act with a considerable degree of autonomy and independence in the provision of mental health support to students while adhering to the ethical standards of the profession. Poor professional judgment or unethical practice would be extremely detrimental to student wellbeing and in some cases could be life threatening. It would also have a significant negative impact on public relations and the reputation of Counselling Services, the Faculty of Medicine, and the University and in some cases result in legal liability for the University. Supervision Received Acts independently within established clinical and ethical guidelines. Works within a model of collegial consultation and collaboration, under the direction of the Associate Director, Embedded Counselling and under the direction of the Associate Dean, Graduate and Postdoctoral Education Supervision Given May provide group supervision for practicum students as well as supervision for project staff and/or students involved in peer programs, work-study programs, and/or volunteer assignments. May delegate administrative work to program assistants Minimum Qualifications Master’s degree in Counselling Psychology or a related field. Eligible for professional certification in British Columbia. Minimum of five years of experience in clinical counselling plus experience supervising Master’s level practicum students. - Willingness to respect diverse perspectives, including perspectives in conflict with one’s own - Demonstrates a commitment to enhancing one’s own awareness, knowledge, and skills related to equity, diversity, and inclusion. Preferred Qualifications · Master's degree in Counselling Psychology or a related field. Eligible for professional certification in British Columbia. · Minimum of five years of experience in Clinical Counselling. · Eligible for registration as a Registered Clinical Counsellor, Registered Social Worker in British Columbia or as a Canadian Certified Counsellor. · University or college counselling experience an asset. · Training and experience in single session, triage, stepped care and brief therapy preferred. · Commitment to serving the needs of a broadly diverse student population. Demonstrated ability to provide services that are responsive and sensitive to the needs of specific student populations including aboriginal students, international students, graduate students, racialized students, students with disabilities and LGBTQ2S+ students. · Demonstrated knowledge of student development theory and experience in program development, consultation and outreach. · Strong interest in and commitment to effective problem solving and continuous improvement of programs and services. Possession of personal attributes that facilitate teamwork and the development of effective working relationships with a wide range of students, faculty, and staff. • Appropriate course-work and training in mental health assessment, individual and group counselling; program evaluation, adolescent and adult development; learning theory; career development, cross-cultural counselling and diversity, personality theory and diagnosis and treatment of psychopathology. · Knowledge of the unique issues facing university students and university life. · Expertise and experience in treatment of a wide range of concerns that post-secondary and professional program students may experience including stress, depression, anxiety, substance use, relationship difficulties, eating/body image issues, career/life planning, transition issues and sexual violence.
