Job Description: ACCOUNTABILITIES: Assistant Cook: Assist Cook on duty to estimate food consumption and requisition food items, if required Follow menu, considering leftovers, donated foods, and types of meals to be served. If required, change menu to use up leftovers and donated food, documenting deviations from the menu as per policies and procedures. Prepare a variety of food for special luncheons, bag lunches, Bethany programs, and any other events as assigned; portion cooked food, carve meat, bake, etc. Ensure that food served is safe, healthy, presentable, and tasty Ensure that any necessary preparations for the following day are in place Actively engages the youth in learning cooking skills, menu planning and life-skills needed to provide for themselves when they become independent Adhere to Government Health and Safety Regulations Maintain strict security of kitchen, dining room, equipment, and cleanliness standards Kitchen Organization/Maintenance: Ensure quality preparation of meals and snacks as required on shift, while maintaining a high level of cleanliness of the eating and cooking areas and recording required items when used. Ensure and maintain a high standard of cleanliness and sanitary conditions in dining room, kitchen and food storage areas Receive and check foods and supplies requisitioned for quality and quantity and ensure proper and organized storage Ensure adequate rotation of food supplies in order that food stored does not become stale Report maintenance problems and equipment needs to Maintenance staff via work order Clean areas used. Help with all cleaning including dishes if needed. Dry mop and wash floors in kitchen Maintain all records and reports as necessary Attend all staff meetings as required MANAGERIAL/TECHNICAL LEADERSHIP RESPONSIBILITY: Reporting directly to the Program Coordinator, this role provides assistance in maintaining workflow in the kitchen. Work closely with the Youth Care Worker— House Parent in all matters related to food services at Bethany Home. FINANCIAL AND MATERIALS MANAGEMENT: Does not have formal financial expenditure authority but would be expected to use/maintain organization assets in accordance with established guidelines. Occasionally responsible for ensuring the effective usage of food and supplies and accountable for the safe operation and maintenance of kitchen equipment. WORKING CONDITIONS: Working conditions typical of a kitchen environment with no travel typically required. May be exposed to a busy environment on occasion, various temperatures between the oven and the fridge, sharp and hot objects, spills/slippery surfaces, odours, disagreeable people, and cleaning materials. Ability to reach, bend, stoop, and frequently lift up to 20 pounds. Work in a standing position for long periods. May work holidays and weekends. EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE QUALIFICATIONS: Education, Qualifications and Certifications: High School Diploma and a minimum of 6 months of specialized training Criminal Record Check with Vulnerable Sector Check Food Safe Level 1 CPR First Aid (C)Non-Violent Crisis Intervention Certificate or willingness to obtain Therapeutic Crisis Intervention (TCI) Certificate — training will be provided if necessary. Experience and Skilled Knowledge Requirements Entry-level position with knowledge of nutrition and safe food handling Have knowledge of safe handling guidelines and proper maintenance and operation of all equipment Skills and Capabilities: Understanding and support for the mission and purpose of The Salvation Army in Canada and its implications as related to position responsibilities. Strong listening, written and verbal communication skills — clear and simple to understand. Patience and ability to deescalate situations. Ability to make decisions within established framework while understanding the impact decisions will have on programming as well as programs around them. Demonstrates effective interpersonal and communication skills and the ability to deal with internal and external contacts at all levels of the organization in a professional manner. Ability to develop and maintain a team environment; work cooperatively and effectively with others to set goals, resolve problems, and make decisions that enhance organizational effectiveness. Demonstrated ability to take initiative, be reliable, and operate in an environment of accountability. Physical ability to perform tasks. Possess a positive attitude and works well with other team members. Ability to work with hard to handle youth. Please note this term position is filling a medical leave therefore the term end date may end sooner or be extended with minimum two weeks notice. Compensation: The target hiring range for this position is $20.96 to $21.52 with a maximum of $22.07. Placement in the salary range will be based on factors such as market conditions, internal equity, and candidate experience, skills, and qualifications relevant to the role.
