Director, Legal & Business Affairs – Production
The Legal and Business Affairs team in our Toronto office is looking for a new Director of Legal & Business Affairs - Production. Reporting to the Vice President, Legal & Business Affairs, the role will be responsible for working with all of Blue Ant’s production teams, drafting and negotiating development and production agreements and assisting with all legal and business affairs matters on Blue Ant’s numerous productions.
Legal and business affairs experience in unscripted production, scripted development and distribution is imperative. The successful candidate should also be a creative problem solver with the ability to manage competing interests and multiple deadlines while working independently and with supervision.
This role is a hybrid position requiring in-office attendance at our head office in Toronto for a minimum of three (3) days per week.
Core Responsibilities & Duties
Understanding, drafting, reviewing, and negotiating legal agreements in connection with development, production, licensing, and distribution of Blue Ant Studios original scripted, unscripted and/or animated television productions, service productions and treaty co-productions
Knowledge of Canadian and US talent guilds and legal requirements relating thereto
Negotiating terms and drafting/reviewing production, broadcaster and distribution related agreements including: (1) development agreements (e.g. rights acquisition, shopping, collaboration, writer agreements etc.); (2) production agreements for television productions such as chain of title, co-production and treaty co-production agreements, broadcast licenses, agreements with talent; (3) financing agreements and documentation; and (4) distribution related agreements for Blue Ant and third party content
Provide general legal advice to, and liaise with, executives in creative, production, finance, and other key client groups; and manage general legal matters related to relevant projects
Managing all aspects of those matters, including advising on strategy and deal structure from term sheet through execution of agreement
Key Qualifications & Experience
A law degree from a recognized institution and are a member in good standing of the Law Society of Ontario
3+ years of relevant experience and working knowledge in television industry, either in private practice or in-house studio experience (preferred) or experience in a corporate law environment, preferably with some IP experience.
Exceptional communication, negotiation, conceptual thinking, analytical and problem-solving and decision-making skills, with great attention to detail
Excellent ability to prioritize and manage competing deadlines, self-motivated and able to thrive in an energetic, fast paced, high growth environment, managing multiple projects simultaneously
Strong ability to work as a collaborative team member across organizational lines and with all levels of management, as well as autonomously
