About SAAAC Autism Centre
The SAAAC Autism Centre is a registered charity based in Toronto. The centre was founded in 2008 with the intention of empowering culturally and linguistically diverse families in need of ASD support.
The organization’s mandate is to provide culturally responsive services that encourage lifelong development of children, youth, and adults with autism; empower caregivers through education, training, and peer support networks; and increase access through community engagement and knowledge sharing.
SAAAC is proud to be able to deliver a combination of free and subsidized programming made possible through strong partnerships across federal, provincial, and municipal governments along with autism agencies and private donors.
Your Role on Our Team
The Classroom Facilitator Level 1 (CF1) will work within a team to develop and deliver group-based skill-building sessions in the areas of communication, behaviour management/emotional regulation, social/interpersonal skills, functional routines and Pre academics to young children with a diagnosis of Autism Spectrum Disorder to support entry to school. The CF1 will consult and collaborate with other clinicians and/or clinical teams working with the child to align learning goals and strategies. This position reports to a Program Supervisor.
Main Responsibilities
• Developing and implementing appropriate activities for children designed to help them reach their personal goals, including the following:
o Conduct activities such as singing, storytelling, acting, modelling play skills, and engaging in play with children. .
o Participate in intake activities as necessary.
o Effectively use ABA teaching strategies such as Reinforcement, Verbal and Physical Prompts, Shaping, Chaining, Modelling and Fading.
o Assist in assessing individual children’s skills, abilities, interests, strengths, and needs.
o Assist in planning, including conducting skill-based assessments and curriculum assessments.
o Prepare and implementing activities as per curriculum.
o Monitor student behaviour and teaching appropriate behaviour.
o Monitor children throughout the day, including snack times.
o Address the personal care requirements of the child during each session.
o Assist in the evaluation of children’s progress toward program goals.
o Build rapport with children to support progress.
• Communicate and record day-to-day observations.
• Assist in the development of Service Plans.
• Maintain materials and equipment and a tidy classroom.
• Participate in classroom and full team meetings.
• Collaborate with other team members.
• Keep supervisor informed of program concerns and client progress (e.g. flagging exceptional circumstances and need for program change).
• Develop and maintain positive relationships with families, caregivers, partner agencies, internal teams, and volunteers.
• Review available information pertaining to all children in the classroom on a regular basis.
• During the 6-month transition portion of the program, classroom facilitators may be reassigned to support with coverage within other SAAAC Programs.
• Due to the changing nature of the job and the job requirements, duties and responsibilities may be changed from time to time.
Required Skills
• 1 to 2 years’ experience working with preschool children preferred.
• Experience working with children with ASD is an asset.
• Satisfactory current Vulnerable Sector Check.
